とてもコンパクトに美しくまとまった、ベトナム戦争を恒星間戦争に投影した寓話という感じ。創作技術的に非常に優れていると思うとともに、テーマ、背景設定、構成などがこれだけピッタリとまとまった幸運な作品はそうは現れないと思う。(1)ベトナム戦争の恐ろしさを恒星間戦争のガジェットに投影、誇張してみせる技術が優れている。例えば、戦場から戻った兵士たちが感じる疎外感（映画ランボーですな)をウラシマ効果で誇張してみせる。(2)ベトナム戦争の体験を生かした戦場の描写が作品にリアリティを持たせている。ときどき挿入される部隊編成表や通達がいいなあ。(3)1000年もの実時間に及ぶ『終わりなき戦い』を4つの連作中短編の形式で構成しており、メリハリがあって構成が美しい。ドロドロした恐ろしい戦場を、都会的で洗練された表現で描いた感じ。ハイテク戦争ってそんなものかもしれないと思った。(4)コラプサージャンプというガジェットによって異星人との戦争を陳腐化から救い出した功績は大きい。ガジェットは随所にちりばめられ、ハードSFとしても優れている。

異星人との星間戦争に付随する“ウラシマ効果”で、主人公は家族，戦友等“身の周りの人達”と違った時間を過ごして行く。
帰還する度に変わってゆく地球、そして其処に暮らす人々の社会観・価値観も変わってしまう・・・ベトナム帰還兵である作者が感じたであろう違和感を、主人公も感じて行く。

日本では浦島太郎と言う先人(？)が居ますが、本作品の主人公も同じ様に“変わってしまった世界に一人ぼっち”と絶望するのか？は、読んでからのお楽しみ。

一つ言えるのは、周りの人達と普通に同じ時間を共有する事って(←当たり前の事ですが)、幸せな事なんでしょうね。

国連探検軍はエリート徴兵法により、史上最強の歩兵部隊を得た。
とびぬけて健康かつ頑強な肉体を持ち、知能指数１５０以上の天才達。
彼らは対数フィードバックパワードスーツに身を包み、
いかなる異星の上であろうとも完璧なバーサーカーとなるのだ。
敵はもちろん、気持ち悪くて恥ずかしい異星人である。
ウラシマ効果を考え、世紀単位の作戦を立て、
銀河中を舞台に、千年にも及ぶ戦いが始まった！
本書はもっとも明確な「宇宙の戦士」のアンチテーゼである。
反戦ＳＦですが、アイデアに満ちた戦闘シーンが素晴らしい。
３１４３年までの未来社会の描写も面白い。
無駄を一切省いた理想的な小説である。
読み始めたらやめられないが、読み終るのが惜しくなる作品である。
私は本書を読む前に内容を書評によってほとんど知っていたが、
それでも楽しく読めた。
でも、日本語版への序文は本文を読んだ後にした方がいいと思う
