クラークはただのSF作家にとどまらず、「幼年期の終わり」で示したような人類の進化を見据えたその思想も高く評価されている。でもやっぱりクラークは無類のエンターテイメント作家なのである。この作品ではハラハラドキドキといった読書の基本的な楽しみを余すとこなく味わせてくれる。未知の宇宙から飛来した謎の物体ラーマは一体何なのか？どんな目的があってやって来たのか？一度これらの謎に興味を覚えたら、もう本を置くことはできないだろう。

とあるウエッブサイトで、この小説を「キャラが立ってない」と批判しているのを見た。こういうのを
「木に縁って魚を求める」批評と呼ぶ。芥川龍之介が嗤った、見当違いな批評の代表である。
クラークは最初から人間を描こうなどとしていない。描こうとしているのは、巨大なスペースコロニー

への科学的アプローチである。そしてそれは強烈なセンス・オブ・ワンダーで読者を圧倒する。
スタージョンは本書を評して「ユークリッド幾何学の生々しいスペクタクル」と言った。
この評語こそ、本書の魅力を余すところ無く物語っているのだと言えよう。

クラーク氏の作品のほとんどは人類全体が人類以上の何かに俯瞰されている様子を描写します。そして人類の存在意義に対して哀れみとも言える感情が示されます。まるで宇宙には人類以上の知的レベルを持った生命体がいないとは断言できないとクラーク氏が言っているようにも思えます。
本作ではその人類以上の何かが宇宙に存在するということを決定付ける「ラーマ」という正体不明の金属筒が突如飛来します。人類は驚愕しその金属筒へランデブーし、筒内の調査を開始します。筒内は人類の理解が全く及ばない世界が広がっており、太陽系内の誰一人として金属筒の正体と存在意義を証明することができません。そして月日が流れていき・・・。
人類の固定概念がことごとく崩壊していく様は読んでいて気持ち良くなります

関連文献として、同じく正体不明の物質の調査を試みる小松左京氏の未完の大作『虚無回廊』を挙げておきます。
