このシリーズ全編に登場する「心理歴史学」と言う仮想理論は、
SF的論考として興味深いだけでなく、
出版当時(1942年)からすると驚異的と言って良い未来予測も含まれていた。

「衰退しつつある巨大な組織の将来的な滅亡自体は救えないが、
　遠く離れて影響の少ない場所に小回りの効く別組織を置くことにより、
　巨大組織滅亡の悪影響は最小限に抑えることが出来る。」
と言う、物語中の"ファウンデーション"の考え方は、
最近の現実世界のマーケティング理論にも同じものを見ることが出来る。
(現実の理論は「イノベーションのジレンマ」を読んで欲しい)

このような極めて論理的な論考に基づいて書かれたシリーズ第1作は、
社会科学的な興味を惹くアカデミックな面白さが特徴的だった。
ところがさすがのアシモフも、純粋に科学的な論考だけで、
「銀河帝国興亡史」と言えるだけの十分な物語は苦しくなったのだろう。
シリーズ第2作において、"精神作用力"を持った超能力者を登場させた。

精神作用力とは他人の心を自由に操る能力であるが、
これはある意味SFにおいては反則技かもしれない。
なにしろ、いくらでもご都合主義的な物語が出来てしまうのだから。
凡百の作家なら、せいぜい超人的なヒーローの能力に使うところだろうか。

もちろん、アシモフはそんな野暮なことはしない。
このシリーズ第3作で繰り広げられているのは、
精神作用力を持った者同士の丁々発止の騙し合いなのだが、
極めて高度な論理パズルの様相も見せてくれる。
さらには推理小説にも似た謎解きのスリルと、
物語が二転も三転も四転もした後に、さらに大どんでん返しがやってくるのだ。

ただし、高度な論理パズルに、少しばかり頭が疲れてしまうことには注意。
もちろん「パズル」が好きな人には堪えられない面白さなのだが。

壮大な未来の歴史物語の大御所といってよいシリーズです。
「ローマ帝国衰亡史」をモデルに架空の未来史を作り上げた
アシモフは科学･歴史など多芸な才能をもった人物だということが、
改めて分かる作品です。
「銀河英雄伝説」などもこの作品の影響を受けたことからも、
やはり一度は読んでおきたい作品です。

で、この巻はファウンデーションの最大の敵として立ちはだかった
ミュール、そして謎に包まれていた第２ファウンデーションが物語りの
中心になります。
シリーズはこの後も続きますが、アシモフが一度筆を置いたように
この３部作で一区切りがついており、
続編は蛇足という感もしないわけでもありません。

●ミュールによる探索
ほとんどが理論的な会話による心理戦、
あっという間に読んでしまいます。
アシモフはドストエフスキー並みに凄い人だ
と実感する章です

●ファウンデーションによる探索
知的で行動力のあるアーカディがなんといっても魅力的です
もちろんアンソーア、カリア、第一発言者、ホバーマンといった人々も血が通っていて良い

・アーカディがカリアの目に気が付く(付かされる？)場面
・トランタ−への逃走をはかるあたり
で感じる
「得体の知れないものに追われている」というような恐怖感。
物凄いです・・・

ラスト近くでの畳みかけるような、
自説を各自が語り出すシーンも素晴らしく、
一気に読んでしまう
