　７人のSF作家による短編アンソロジー。
　表題作「冷たい方程式」は、ある惑星で疫病に苦しむ６人に血清を届けるため発射された緊急宇宙艇内が舞台。艇は一人の乗員とわずかな積荷を届けるのがギリギリの燃料しか積まれていない。そこに密航者が紛れ込み、このままでは重量オーバーで宇宙航行が続けられない。パイロットの選択肢は一つ。密航者の船外遺棄だ。しかし密航者は兄に会いたいがために貨物室に隠れていた十代の少女だった。パイロットはこの娘を船外遺棄することなく、惑星に辿りつくことはできるのだろうか…。

　少女を遺棄しなければ、６人の仲間とパイロットと、そして少女も含めた８人全員が犠牲になります。少女１人を犠牲にすれば６人＋パイロットの７人を救うことが出来る。つまり少女を遺棄しないという行為によって得られるものは何もありません。命の方程式の答は火を見るよりも明らか。最近耳なじみになった言葉でいえば、この少女は「コラテラル・ダメージ」（大きな利益の前のやむをえない多少の犠牲）といったところでしょう。

　しかし、このように人間を数値に置き換えることで答を出すことが理屈の上ではいくら可能であっても、そこにやりきれないほどの理不尽さや不条理を感じるのが人間です。そしてそうした心の葛藤を抱く力があるからこそ、人間というのは愛すべき存在であり続けるのです。

　この短編は、人間が足したり引いたりできるような「割り切れる」存在ではないことを、SFという特異な設定を借りて私たちに明確に差し出してみせます。

　また「過去へ来た男」では、２０世紀から１０世紀のアイスランドへスリップした米軍兵士の姿を通して、決して人間が１０００年の間により優れた存在へと変わったわけではないことを描いてみせます。「タイムパトロール」シリーズのポール・アンダーソンならではの好編といえます。

　私は堪能しました。

SF古典の最高傑作のひとつですね。
過去幾多のSF作家が、このモティーフを様々に料理しなおし、
そのインスピレーションの根源となったものです。

人間的情をはるかに超える物理法則が、実は人間の安全な社会を
規定している。物理法則は、人間の温情では変える事ができない。
片道分の燃料しか積んでいない宇宙船に、兄会いたさに密航した

少女がいたとしたら・・・彼女を船外遺棄しない限り、誰も助か
らない状況に追い込まれたとしたら。

そんな事実を、真綿でくるまれた安全圏で過ごす人類には、

なかなか理解できないかもしれない。
けど、宇宙が身近になってきた現代、この冷たい方程式は
もう一度読まれてもいいのではないかと思う。

　表題作がとても有名だが、一人の作家の作品集ではないので、まだ読んでいないという方が結構いるのではないか。それはとても惜しいので、ぜひご一読を。古典もいいところなので、最近のＳＦに慣れている若い方には古く感じられるかもしれないが、こういうところから始まったのだというのを知るのも悪くないと思う。
　「冷たい方程式」を読んだ後、飛行機に乗って着陸の順番待ちの旋回飛行とかされると、ちょっと怖い。特に燃料高騰の折なんかは。
