落ち込んだり、なんだか毎日がうまくいかないような気がする日に開くのに最適な一冊です。
主人公の“ぼく”と猫のピートがどん底から、これでもかこれでもかとひっくり返してくれる様は本当に痛快。
スピーディな展開のハインラインの傑作に、主人公が乗り移ったかのような福島氏の翻訳がまたいい味なのです。

一気に読み進み、『夏への扉』を閉じた時に、ふさいでいた気持ちをすっかり忘れてしまうこと請け合いです。
何度も繰り返して読んでも飽きず、友人に勧めまくっています。SFといってもタイムトラベルの味付けくらいなので読みやすく、読んだ友人は１００％よかった！と言ってくれてます。
本当に楽しめ、気持ちよくやる気をもらえる一冊。

ぜひ、この爽快感を味わってほしいです。

5.0 out of 5 stars オール・タイム・ベスト。SFというジャンルを超えた傑作。, 2006/8/8
世界三大SF作家の一人、ハインラインの最高傑作の一つ。ハヤカワ書房の投票では一位に輝いたこともあります。
発明家の主人公が共同経営者や婚約者に裏切られつつも、現実逃避の30年後へと向かう冷凍睡眠、元の世界へ戻るタイムトリップ等の波乱の旅を軽快に、前向きに進んで行きます。
猫が小品としてアクセントを与えていますが、猫は余り、重要なファクターではありません。
主人公の欲のない、お人好しでありながらも、前向きで、どこか頼りないキャラクターに軽やかさのスパイスを振りかけてくれる存在です。
どこか気まぐれで、どこかmy way、そんな元気の出る一人の青年の人生の旅を描いた本作は、とても読みやすく、ハインラインの作品にしては、好き嫌いが出ないと思います。
しかし、ところどこらには、流石！と唸らせる名文句もちりばめられています。
タイムトラベル物とか、SFとかいう縛りを超えた軽快な傑作で、是非、SFファン以外にも、読んでいただきたいです。
すっと読めてしまいますよ。

　時は「近未来」の１９７０年。天才技術者・ダニエル＝ブーン＝ディヴィスは、友人のマイルズ＝ジェントリイと秘書のベル＝ダーキンと共に小さな会社を経営していた。
　発明した家事ロボットは大いに当たり、美人秘書とも恋仲になり、幸福の絶頂にあったダニイだったが、ある日突然、彼の身に不幸が襲いかかった！　何と友人と恋人に裏切られ、会社から放り出された上、発明の特許まで騙し取られたのだ！！
　人生に絶望したダニイは、飼い猫のピートと共に冷凍睡眠で３０年後の未来に行き、年老いた友人と恋人の前に若々しい姿のままで現れるという奇想天外な復讐を考えるが、途中で思い直し、敢然と２人に戦いを挑むべく、愛猫ピートと共にマイルズ邸に乗りこむ。
　ところが逆に奸計にはまり、ピートは辛くも脱出するものの、ダニイは冷凍睡眠で西暦２０００年の「未来」に送り込まれてしまう。
　目覚めたダニイは、復讐のことは忘れてもう一度人生をやり直そうと考えるが、２０００年での生活を続けているうちに、いくつかの不可解な点に気づく。そして真相を突き止めるべく、ダニイはタイムマシンで再び過去に戻った・・・・・・
　タイム・パラドックスを縦横無尽に駆使したＳＦ版「厳窟王」。時間テーマものの傑作であると同時に、正直で誠実な人間への暖かいまなざしと未来への希望にあふれた、心温まる「古き良き」不朽の名作である。万人向けの「超」おすすめの作品！！
