本作は６０年代アメリカを代表する傑作小説。作者が第二次世界大戦で捕虜として体験した辛酸、そして味方である連合軍のドレスデン無差別爆撃に向き合う。しかし、戦争による暴力・破壊と死を前にしては、運命を受け入れざるをえないのだろう。そこで繰り返されるのが、有名な「そういうものだ」(So it goes.)。本書のこの言葉ほど、哀切でかつ諦念を感じさせる名文句はあるだろうか。主人公は時間旅行を繰り返し、自分を誘拐したトラルファマドール星人との交流を通じて、死者は現在具合の悪い状態にあるが、宇宙の破滅に至る時間の流れの中の他の多くの瞬間には良好な状態にあるのだという。人生の半ばを過ぎた（だろう）私も死を恐れずにすみそうである。考えてみれば、作者の死後もこうして著書を繰り返し読めるのも何とトラルファマドール的であることか。

宇宙人が地球に贈る新しい福音書等、作家キルゴア・トラウトのＳＦ小説の粗筋が現実世界をおかしく風刺しており、小説中のミニ小説になっている点は前作「ローズウォーターさん、あなたに神のお恵みを」に共通する。そう、本作ではトラウトを始めとする過去の名作の登場人物（「母なる夜」のハワード・Ｗ・キャンベル・ジュニア等）が勢揃いするのが楽しい。

本作で涙が出るほど美しい場面は、主人公ビリーが深夜映画で空襲を逆向きに見る場面。火災が縮小して円筒形容器に収まり、回収・解体され、鉱物が地中深く埋められる。こんなに幻想的かつ感動的な反戦のメッセージを私は他に知らない。もっとも、本書は運命の受容に関する最良の処方箋であって、反戦が主眼の本ではないが。

最後に、他のレビュアーが指摘しているように、映画も隠れた傑作。グレン・グールドのバッハがこれほどぴったりの作品は他にない。それでは、プーティーウィッ？

広島以上の犠牲者を出したドレスデンへの空爆。歴史から抹消されそうになった事実を、ＳＦタッチで、しかもユーモラスに淡々と描いていく。「人間はとてつもなく哀しい時には笑うしかない」という作者の言葉が身に染みる作品である。作家は、時代に警鐘を鳴らす、「坑道のカナリア」であるべきだという持論が遺憾なく発揮されている名著。さりとて、堅苦しくなく、すらすらと読めてしまう軽妙な語り口は見事。

SFの形をとっていますが、無常観というか諸行無常、人生と人間のお話ですね。
映画の方も傑作でアメリカンニューシネマの巨匠名匠ジョージ・ロイ・ヒルが
「明日に向かって撃て」の成功で映画会社の重役からご褒美になんでも好きな映画を
創らせてあげるよ　て言われて撮ったのがこの原作です。　
と聞いたことあります。
映画の方は日本ではビデオは絶版で再ソフト化されてないみたいですね。
残念。
