『砂漠の惑星』はレム著書の中でも確実に「読みやすい」作品であると思う。LHSF(レムハードサイエンスフィクション)３部作と呼ばれている(本当か？いいのかそんな事言って)『エデン』『砂漠の惑星』『ソラリスの陽のもとに』の中の1作であり、その中でも最も規模の大きい冒険活劇であるといえる。勿論レムのことだから、冒険活劇と言っても、STでもSWでもGUNDAMでもない。そこにはやはりこれらの作品がしばしば３部作と呼ばれる所以でもある「根本的な未知との遭遇」がテーマであるからだと思われる。

なんて難しいことを言っても仕方ない。実際主人公の(ヒロイズムとも言える程の)活躍には胸をときめかさずにはいられなし、船長の(ダンディズムとしか言い様のない)渋みは思わず宇宙船『無敵号』の船員でない自分も悔しくなるほどだ！んだ！　中高生の若いSFファンが速くこの書に出会える事を願う。

レムが死んだ。８４歳。死因・日時は不明。
３月２８日、助手が「クラクフの病院にて死亡」
と発表。

本作を読んだのは、サンリオ文庫でレムの
一連の長編が出ていた頃、或いは講談社文庫で
「素晴らしきレムの世界」というタイトルの
２冊組みの短編集を読んだ頃より、随分、
後の事である。（多分、３０歳くらいの時。）

本作では、非有機体の進化が描かれているが、
今、思い出すのは、講談社の短編集にあった
「リンファーテルの公式」である。
この短編「リンファーテル」では、人類の
知性を母胎（MATRIX）として進化した、
人工有機体の知性が描かれているが、
その進化した知性体によって、完全に
置いてけぼりを食ってしまう人類の
絶望的な立場が印象的である。

翻って、本作（原題『無敵』）では
非有機体の、必ずしも、より知性的に
なる必要のなかった進化が、描かれていて
「人には人の道がある。」という
希望に満ちた作品となっている。
先の短編「リンファーテル」と
合わせて読むと、レムの、精神性の
「明暗」の対比が浮き彫りになって
興味深い。

（なお、レムの死については、
「故人を偲ぶ」が、合掌等は
しない。）

人間が進化するに連れ完璧になっていくものと感じてしまう。
しかし、人間が環境を変化させて行くに従い抵抗力をつけてもっと力強く
なっていくものもいる。

生命対生命、頭脳対反応。その戦争に和平を結ぶのは読者であるあなたになるでしょう。
