　３０年近く前に読んだ名作。
　当時ではこの作品、斬新かつ前衛的で、イメージが頭の中に溢れかえる新しいSFでしたが、今や堂々の古典作品であす。
　地球に住む我々以外の命や知性を考えるとき、それまでのSFは地球に捕らわれた発想が主でしたが、作者は異なる存在を創造し、後々に大きな足跡を残したと私は思います。
　最近公開されたジョージ・クルーニー主演の「ソラリス」は残念ながらレムの著書のテイストを充分には描くことができなかった。
　やはり、読者一人一人が、活字を通じてソラリスへ旅する必要があると確信します。
　私は、ソラリスを抜きにSFを語ることはできません。

結局のところ人間とはなんなんだろうか、人間を愛すると言うことはどういうことなんだろうか、この、とても読後感の苦（にが）い小説をよんでますます分からなくなることばかりだ。

レム自身はこの小説を「宇宙人と仲良くなるか、勝つか、負けるか、というアメリカのＳＦ小説への問題提起」つまり宇宙には我々の既成概念を超える形での知性があるはず、との考えから執筆したとのことだが、そのことを超えて私には、我々は（宇宙に出て行くまでも無く）自分自身について、恋というものについて、「愛」について、なんにも分かっていないのではないか、と考えさせられた。
惑星ソラリスは主人公に、昔の恋人のレプリカを与え、しかし「彼女」は自分が「本当の彼女」ではないことに次第に気づき苦悩を深め!ていく。でも我々には「彼女」の主人公への想いは、まぎれもない「愛」だということが痛いほど分かるのだ。しかし「愛」ってなんなのか・・・？

この広大な宇宙のどこかには地球人のほかにも知的生命体がいるだろう、と告げる物語はほかにもたくさんありますが、この話はちょっとすごい。それは侵略してくるのでもなく、また積極的に友好関係をむすぼうというのでもなく、地球からやってくる人々にただふれていくのです。

主人公のケルビン青年が惑星ソラリスに赴任するところから、この不思議な物語がはじまります。ところが彼がソラリス・ステーションについてみると、先に着任しているはずの三人の研究者が見あたりません。ステーション自体もこころなしか荒廃した印象があります。まもなく姿をあらわした一人の研究者も酔ってでもいるのか、どことなく常軌を逸しているようです。
なにかがおかしい、と彼は思います。密閉されたステーション内なにが起こったのか。在るのはただ、すみれ色の靄におおわれて、もの憂げにのたうっているソラリスの海ばかり。これはまるでホラー仕立ての展開です。
読みすすむうち、ケルビン青年が出会う未知のものに、きっと読者も一緒になって目をみはることでしょう。
未知なるもの。

星の海にへ出て行った先で、わたしたちのうちのだれかは彼らに出会うかもしれません。勝つわけでもなく、負かされるわけでもなく、理解しあうわけでもなく、ただふれるというかたちで。
