はるかな未来、地球の自転は止まり、永久に太陽に熱せられる部分と闇に閉ざされる部分に分かれた。太陽熱で温室となった地帯では、人類をはじめ動物は退化し、代わりに植物が奇妙な進化をとげて世界を支配する。この不思議な世界を旅する運命となった男の冒険。

種をまくところを探してうろつきまわる植物、月まで蔓を伸ばす植物、蟻をあやつる茸、火を武器にして投げつける植物など、作者の想像力が考え出したジャングルはなんとも猥雑なエネルギーに満ちています。

異形の生命体がはびこるさまは宮崎駿「風の谷のナウシカ」や椎名誠「水域」に似ています。しかしストーリー重視のそれらの作品と違い、アイディアとその描写に重きをおいているように感じました。

太陽が超新星となり爆発する寸前の地球には大陸を覆う巨大な木と、樹上と月世界を結ぶ「神」がいた。
獰猛な植物たちの支配する星に生き延びた動物はシロアリとハチと人類であった・・
冒頭の圧倒的なイメージで物語に引きずり込まれます。
主人公の旅は生存をかけた戦いから、やがて知の深遠へと達します。
翻訳もすばらしい。

若い頃は、気が付かなかったが、今読むと、この物語は《人生の縮図》そのものだ、という気がしてくる。次から次へと訪れる、得体の知れぬ生物と、予期せぬ危機の連続。はっきり言って、これは人生そのものだ、という感じである。ラスト、主人公が言う「ここが家だ。危険は揺りかごさ。今まで覚えたことが、ぼくらを守ってくれる!」という台詞は、30を軽く越えた今だからこそ、本当に共感できます。単なる娯楽ではなく、本当の意味における《神話文学》の傑作だと思います。
