この本はなんと１９４９年に公刊された。つまりまだ人類が月にいくなんてことが完全にSFだった頃につくられた。映画ではオリジナルの宇宙戦争が公開される前である。

だからすごい夢一杯。月人、火星人、金星人がいるという設定になっているし、タイムマシンがなんとミシンをいじってるのをきっかけとして開発されてしまうなんて魔法使いの世界。

とは言え、黒い霧につつまれ、闇世界が支配する夜のニューヨークはなかなかの緊迫感を与えてくれるし、スパイとして狙われながら、「発狂した」世界と自分自身を探す謎解きは、それなりのミステリー小説の感がある。

キャラクターもなかなか光ってる。なぜかビキニみたいな服をきている宇宙女性の美人ベティ、ヒーローそのもののドペル、心を読み取るコンピューターロボット、メッキー。

何度も読みたくなる元祖SFの金字塔である。

このＳＦの古典・名作に最初にレビューが書けるのことに驚いた。不思議に思って最新のハヤカワ文庫解説目録（２００３年７月）をみてまたびっくり。現在フレドリック・ブラウンの本は「火星人ゴーホーム」１冊しか出ていないではないか。ということは、この本を手に入れるのに世間の皆さんは苦労されるということか？「多元宇宙もの」の名作なんですぞ。

これは、おもしろかった。
まだＳＦにも超未熟な時期に読んだにもかかわらず、大変楽しんで読了したおぼえがある。本書はパラレル・ワールド（多元宇宙）物の傑作なのだ。
書かれた時代が古いから、いまの時代からみれば理論なんか子どもの屁理屈くらいにしか感じないかもしれないが、そこはブラウンのこと巧みなストーリーテリングで引っぱりまわし、読者を翻弄するさまは、いま読んでもまったく見劣りしない。
主人公であるキース・ウィントンは、月ロケットの爆発によりもうひとつの世界に飛ばされてしまう。同じ世界のように見えるが、その世界では科学の発展が歴然と違っていた。人類は宇宙への進出を成功させ、あろうことか異星人と戦争までしてるのである。
事態を把握したウィントンは、元の世界に戻るべくさまざまな試みに挑戦するが、やがて彼自身も異星人のスパイの容疑をかけられ追われる羽目になる。
ストーリーの語り口は一級品。展開もよどみなく構成も巧み。話自体もハッピーエンドで気持ちいい。ユーモアもあり、サスペンスもある。
う〜ん、なかなかのオススメ品ですよ本書は。
