まず最初に言いたいのが表紙イラスト。大嘘にも程がある！この絵を見れば、誰だってシリウスを舞台にしたか、あるいはその星に関係がある話だと思うでしょうが、本作は“星のシリウスとは全く関係ない話”です。地球どころかイギリス本土から一歩も外へは離れず、異星人もＵＦＯも出てきません。シリウスというのは犬の名前に過ぎません。

内容は『アルジャーノンに花束を』のような超知性を持ってしまった動物の悲喜劇を描いた物語（ただしシリウスは期間限定ではなく、生まれつきですが）であり、『吾輩は猫である』のように動物の目から人間を風刺した小説です。

確かに現在では不可能な生物工学ですが、ＳＦとしてのｉｆはそこだけ。しかも作品世界でも前にも後にも同じような超知性を持つ犬が誕生しなかったことを考えれば、本作はＳＦである必要はそれほどありません。西洋版『吾輩は猫である』と言っても過言ではなく、同作がＳＦと呼ばれないように、本作も作者はそれほどＳＦを描くという認識はなかったのではないでしょうか（これは現在では誰が見てもＳＦである『最後にして最初の人類』なども同様）。

文学としてはシリウスの心情の他に、同時期に生まれた人間の娘・プリクシーとの種族を越えた愛情もテーマになっている。このあたりが『アルジャーノンに花束を』と多少ダブるところ。

とにかく本作は犬好きなら（もちろん犬好きでなくても）必読の名作です。

SFをそんなに読まないのですが、犬の話が好きなので読みました。大変すばらしい物語です。『超』牧羊犬として、人工的に生み出されたシリウス。彼が人と共に暮らし、様々なことに意識を費やしながら成長していく姿は、読者にとって大変魅力的でしょう。久しぶりに名作を読んだ気持ちになりました。

もしも犬が人間並みの知能を持ったら？そんな仮定のもとに書かれたSF小説。人間並みの知能を持つ犬として作出されたシリウス。創造者の娘とともに人間同様に育てられ、シリウスは犬でありながら、人間のもつ精神世界を学んでゆく。

しかし彼の姿形は犬。犬としての本能と人間としての知性のギャップにどまどい、ときに苛立ち、焦る。人間でありたいと願いながらも、彼には芸術を堪能するための視力や色覚、音楽を楽しむような聴覚は持ち合わせていない。しかもいくら望んでも彼には人間のようにものを創造する「手」がないのだ。一心同体のはずのトリクシーでさえ、成長するにともなって人間たちとの関わりのほうを大切にしはじめる。シリウスの苦悩が続く。

人間に服従したい犬の本能、人間として独立したいと願う人間への願望。相反するふたつの心の葛藤がうまく描かれている。ときに深く人間を愛し、ときに激しく憎悪するシリウスの内的世界は読み応えがある。知性を持った犬ということでは、クーンツの「ウォッチャーズ」が思い浮かぶ。エンターテインメントとして楽しむのなら、「ウォッチャーズ」がお勧めだが、そこから一歩踏み込んで、（犬の目を通して）人間とは？と考えることができるのはこちら。
