この作品は雑誌 '新青年' に連載され，1935年5月異例にも新潮社から豪華本として発行された．著者序文によれば，"褒められるにも，誹られるにも，悉く最大級の用語を以ってせられた" そうだが，それは現在まで70年以上の間継続している．探偵小説であるかどうかは全く問題ではなく，明治以後この国で書かれた最も衒学的な，謎に満ち満ちた作品で，この方面の達人であった澁澤龍彦氏もどこまでが本当でどこからが捏造かを桃源社版の解説で研究したが，ウィチグス呪法典で挫折した程である．この早川版は旧字旧かなのままで，それが最大の長所である．この作品は解けない謎なのだから濫りに改めては謎がより見えなくなるのだ．私はこの傑作と６０年来付き合っているが，今度初めて判った本当が一つあった．それはヴィオラの巨匠テルチスで，今井信子さんの本で初めて知った Lionel Tertis のことだった．この始末なので，うっかり嘘だと言えない恐ろしさがあるのだ．それと，生粋の神田っ子の歯切れ良い戦前の下町言葉．とにかく天下の奇書である．

「アストロ球団」ってのがありますよね。
ちょいと乱暴な言い方すれば、『黒死館』はそれの推理小説版。かな。
違うかもしれない。
　あちらこちらで炸裂する、生身の人間の身体能力やら思考能力やらを超越しちゃうトリック。それに対する、法水の、これまた超人的な推理。そして、本筋から猛々しく脱線しまくって垂れ流される薀蓄。
　正面から読むと難解。文学に対して門外漢である私には、チンプンカンプンです、はい。でも、これは『アストロ球団』の世界なんだ、と思ったとき、なんだか一気に作品世界に引きずり込まれましたよ。
　こんな読み方、はっきりいって良くない、というより悪いでしょう。でもまぁ、そんな読み方も一応許してくださるこの『黒死館』という書物の包容力のすごさ、きっと１００人が読んだら１００通りの楽しみ方ができる空前の書だと思いますが。

町はずれの洋館。閉ざされた世界の中、高貴で陰惨な生活を送る貴族達。殺人予告があって、密室の殺人事件が起きるのは探偵ものの定石としても、占星術から中世・近代西洋史、医学に薬学に物理学、闇を歩く自動人形に門外不出の謎の四重奏団。さらに注釈があっても俄には理解できない衒学的な登場人物達の言葉の応酬。少なくともゲーテの「ファウスト」ぐらいは読んでからでないと、筋にすらついて行けない。こんなに馬鹿馬鹿しく道具立ての仰々しい殺人事件は他にない。ちなみに、「正統派の推理小説」「ありがちなサスペンス」を期待する人は、反則技の連発に頭に来ると思うのでおすすめしません。
