「きらきら星」や「ロンドン橋」など、日本人である私たちにとっても馴染み深いマザー・グース。紹介してくださるのは、幼少の頃から歌手「小鳩くるみ」さんとして活躍されていた鷲津名都江さんです。マザーグースを歌っていらっしゃった頃から興味を持たれ、ついにはマザーグースを研究されるために英国留学までされた、というほどの経歴に、鷲津さんのマザーグースへの情熱や愛情を感じました。
内容の方は、マザーグースの基礎知識から、特徴の１つであるリズム、そして知られざる裏話（トリビア？）も登場します。どうして、「ナースリーライム」ではなく「マザーグース」という名前で知られているのか。アメリカとイギリス、国によってメロディーの違う歌があるのはなぜか。一見、子供向けでも実は恋愛や恐ろしい意味が含められた歌もあって、気がつけばテキストを食い入るようにして読んでいました。
個人的に思ったのは、せっかく歌詞と訳詩が紹介されているのだから、楽譜もつけてほしかったです。中にはちょっと物足りないように感じる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、それだけ誰にでもわかるようにわかりやすく解説されていると思います。鷲津さんの留学時のエピソードも紹介されたり、クリスマス、バレンタインと放送時のタイムリーな話題も登場したりと、誰もが楽しく受講できる「講座」だと思います。

~2004年12月から放送が始まっているNHK人間講座のテキストです。再放送が３月の初めまであるので、今から買っても間に合いますね。このテキスト単独でも、十分マザーグースの面白さと著者の研究の成果が楽しめます。テレビでは、教室での生徒との授業風景などもあり、鷲津先生の授業の進め方がわかりますし、その優しさや説明の歯切れの良さに、思わず参加したく~~なります。
著者監修で小鳩くるみ歌のCDも出るそうです。~
