ブラジルをはじめとして、世界の各国でサッカー事情を知るのによい。
海外のチームを向かえたり、海外に旅行する前に読んでおくと、楽しみが増える。
面白い写真が搭載されているので、誰が取ったのだろうと思ったら、著者自身だった。
スポーツ紙の特派員から写真家に転身したとのこと。
納得。

ドイツＷ杯で初出場したトリニダード・トバコがかつてＷ杯にあと一歩まで迫ったたときの話。
ドイツＷ杯アジア予選で韓国と引き分けてアジアを驚かせたモルディヴサッカーの原風景。
クリケット人気に支配されつつあるスリランカの老サッカーファンが出会った驚きの人物。
ケニアでのボールを通じて生まれた素敵なエピソード。
そしてエジプトのサッカーファンから思いがけず聞かされたトルシエ、そして日本サッカーへの驚くべき予言。
飄々とした語り口とユーモアで各国のサッカーにまつわるエピソードが楽しめます。

様々な国に足を運んだ著者がサッカーを題材に書いた一冊。
人々との触れ合いを通し、サッカーに対するいろいろな思いが伝わってきます。
個人的には著者の撮った写真の数々とジャマイカの「パン屋大尉」のエッセイが良かったです。
現地に行くことはなかなか大変ですが、試合を観るだけでなく各国の人々の
「体温」を知っておくことも良いのではないでしょうか。
できればもう少しボリュームがあっても良かったと思いますね。
現地の人々の息づかいが聞こえてくる、そんな一冊です。
