この本を朗読してＭＤに録音し、毎日で聞いております。
自分の声を聞くのはいやだけど、内容が本当にいい。
本当にこういう本を待ってました。
なぜウォーターがワラーと聞こえるのか、口をどのように動かしたら音が出るのか、おじさん達が習った教科書には、書いてなかったですね。
先生も教えていなかったと言うより知らなかったのかな。

この本には、そういうことがいっぱい書いてあるのですよ。
大学の先生達が手分けして書いたようだけど、難しくないから中学生からでも読むことをお勧めします。

自分の英語の発音に関して、何とか改善したいなと思っている人には最適の入門書と思います。もっと早くこういった本が発行されていれば、日本人の英語の発音も改善されていたのではないかと思います。発音に関するあらゆる話題が網羅されています。巷には、発音に関する本がたくさん発行されていますが、「暗いL」と「明るいL」に触れた本は、専門書を除いて皆無ですが、この本には丁寧に説明してあります。これをマスターするだけでもあなたの発音が変わります。自分の英語の発音を改善したいと思っているならば、読んで損のない本です。

音声学を専門とする著者（竹林滋氏の門下生たち）によって書かれただけに信頼感が抜群です。
自分のカタカナ発音を何とかしようと何冊かの教材に手を出しましたが、例えば「若いときにアメリカに留学して苦労して発音を身に付けました」というタイプの著者の本などには、標準的な音声学のテキストとは異なる記述がしばしば見られるので、本書のような「信頼に足る」入門書は貴重な存在です。
もっとも、全ての母音・子音の発音の仕方がていねいに説明されているわけではなく、CDの付属もなく、これ一冊を読んだからと言って発音が良くなることはありません。ただ本書のコンセプトである「習ってから慣れよ」の、「習う」の部分に相当する内容として、最低限必要な事項がバランスよくまとめられているので、本書を読んだあと、他のCD付教材などを使って練習する際、すなわち「慣れる」の部分を実践する際の、はっきりとした指針を与えてくれます。
補足：　発音記号については、どの辞書もIPA準拠の記号ですと言いながら、辞書ごとに微妙に異なるため頭が混乱していたのですが、それらの関係がどうなっているのか、この本を読んですっきり整理できました。
