「漫画学」などと、むつかしく考える必要はないと思う。
それより、むしろマンガの実作者の方で、コマが上手く割れないとか、マンガって何なんだ？とか悩んでいる方に一読をお勧めしたい。
他のレビュアーの方も指摘している通り、夏目氏の著作としては、別冊宝島の「マンガの読み方」が断然イチオシだが、「マンガの読み方」と併読するテキストとしては本書も悪くない。視線誘導や圧縮開放といった理論も、たとえば美術出版社から出ている「マンガのすき間」などより、はるかに平易に解説されている。この辺りの夏目氏の本を精読すれば、もうマンガ解析のツールは手に入ったも同然なので、後は自分の気に入ったマンガなどを、そのツールを用いて解析してゆけば良い。私は夏目氏のセオリーをさらに応用発展させることで、長年謎のままだった少女マンガのコマ割りの解析に成功した。
今まで漫然と眺めているだけだったプロの漫画家のコマ割りの技術の本質が見えて来た時の嬉しさは例えようもないものだった。
竹宮恵子は「マンガ言語」という呼び方をしているが、こうして解析された紙面構成の技術はすぐにでも自作に応用の利くものであり、これを豊富に持てば持つほど、自身の技量は向上してゆく。
「コマ割りのやり方は人それぞれでセオリーなどはありません」と嘯いていた美術出版社の本とは比較にならないほど、有益な本である。
漫画家志望者で、まだマンガの描き方が良く分からないという方、まずは何をおいても、夏目氏の著作を読むべし。

5.0 out of 5 stars 安心して読めるマンガ学の基本書のひとつ, 2007/9/1
　１９９６年のＮＨＫの人間大学シリーズのテキストを再構成したもの。早稲田と成城での公演が２本ついている。
　マンガ学の基本書としては、９５年の別冊宝島ＥＸ『マンガの読み方』が第一だろうが、これはその共著者だった夏目の続編に当たるもの。しかし、補遺というより、より整理されて、すっきりしたものになっている。マンガ史に至っては、アトムの次がゴルゴ、そして、吾妻だけだ。実際、たぶん、理論的にはこの三つで足りる。他のマンガ研究者が採り上げたがる奇をてらった技法よりも、凡庸なドラえもんの文法的な底力に注目しているのもおもしろい。
　早稲田の恋愛マンガ論は、いまいち。手塚とつげとタッチで恋愛マンガだ、と言われてはなぁ。成城の方は、香港マンガの現在。これも、なんで、というような、どうでもいい内容。せっかく前半が体系的にまとまっているんだから、こういう関係ない古い講演録でページ数を水増ししたりしなければいいのに。

マンガ学入門として優れた本です。
普段、マンガを読んでいる時には意識しないコマ割りの働きなどを分かりやすく説明してくれます。
手塚治から大友克洋、吾妻ひでお、そして岡崎京子に至るまでのマンガ作品が取り上げられています。
著者は、専門的な学者ではないですが、男女のマンガ家のセクシュアリティの描き方の違いなど、優れた分析をしています。

マンガの持つ魅力を言語化するために、必読書だと思いますよ。
