血統学というより競馬史概論という感じ。
科学的なデータや理論が展開されるというわけではないので、昔の名馬たちやそれら血統の文脈を知りたいという人向けだと思う。
とりあえず馬券に直結するような内容じゃないなぁ。

これまで、「父系」を中心に語られることの多かった競走馬の血統を「母系」に注目してみた書。
著者が自ら認めているように、父系とは違って１頭が出産できる数は限られているし、表面的な特徴というものも伝わりにくい。よって、包括的な議論がしづらい題材となり、この書でもいくつかの牝系を紹介しているにとどまっている。これは仕方の無いところか。
ただ、その一方で、その紹介された牝系を中心にナショナル・スタッド・ブックが作成された歴史であるとか、はたまた、日本の馬産の歴史であるとかが詳細に記述されており、そちらの方面の話としても面白い。下総御料牧場と小岩井牧場の２つに始まる日本の牝系の話などは、日本の競馬の歴史そのものとも言えるわけで、各地に土着しやすい牝系をたどることはその土地の競馬の歴史をたどることと同じ、ということを表しているように思う。
事実上、完璧に取り扱うことが難しい「牝系」であるが、それに積極的に取り組んだ、ということは十分に評価されるべきであろう。

　競走馬の生産を生業としているものです。

　非常に読みやすい本です。筆者も文中で何度となく指摘している通り、母系は父系と比較すると、１頭あたりの産駒数の少なさから、傾向やその馬自身が持つ繁殖能力が掴みづらく、非常に説明しづらいものです。その中で、母系というものがどれほど重要であるかを説いていくのは並大抵のことではないのですが、本書では難解な部分をなるべく省いて、母系が重要視されてきた歴史と優秀な母系が多くの活躍馬を生み出してきたことを中心に、数値などを出して客観的に書こうと試みられています。

　私は生産者ということもあって、生産現場にスポットを当てた『第５章・母の事情』は興味深く読ませてもらいました。この本に書かれていることがすべてではないのですが、血統理論の本で生産現場に目を向けた本は珍しく、システムの説明は意外と知られていないので、現場を知る意味でも競馬ファンの方には読んでいただきたいです。

　血統の本は難しい、という先入観をもって血統に対するアレルギーがある方でも、血統について自身のある方でも、興味深く読める一冊だと思います。
