ついに日本はW杯決勝トーナメント進出を果たしました！
本書は2001年12月と、半年前の発売ですが、まさにこの快挙への道のりが、示されていると思います。
アフリカから、日本という未知の国に旅立つことになった経緯、マスコミや選手との確執から、解任報道、選手評まで、さまざまなエピソードがトルシエ側の視点から明らかにされていて、興味深い内容です。

自分が激しやすい人間だと理解していたことが、意外でした。
サッカーファンはもちろんですが、異文化挑戦記としても面白く、お薦めです。

フランス人という理由だけでは説明できないトルシエ監督のしぶとさには以前から興味を掻き立てられたが、この本を読むと内に秘められた彼の心配りの細やかさ、理性と感情の間でのバランスの取り方がいかに形成されてきたかがわかる。生い立ちからのエピソード等もある意味この本の中で核をなしているようで面白い。一部の表現をナルシスト的自画自賛に見る向きがいるかもしれないが、とにかく彼のひたむきさ、40代半ばを過ぎても尚リスクをとり続けて猛進する熱意には敬服できると思う。祖国を離れ異文化の中を漂流しながらもまれてきた人間ならではの世界観、人間観、また自分を見つめるときの客観的思考が如何に具現化されているかも感慨深い。99年に新幹線で乗り合わせた時にこっそりサインを求めるとカタ
