　上では子供の頃のキッシンジャーがナチスに追われ、アメリカに渡るところから始まります。
　向こうから非ユダヤ人の子供が歩いてくるのをみると、道路の反対側に避けたというエピソードから
スタジアムでユダヤ人であることがばれると袋叩きにされたというエピソードすらあり読む者を退屈させません。
　彼の親族は１３人が強制収容所で命を落としたそうです。
　初めて道路の横によけなくてもいい国に来たキッシンジャーがハーバードでいかに学んでいったか。
　ある種のトラウマをもつ青年がアメリカの最高権力につくまで（外国うまれのために大統領、副大統領にはなれ
ないが）をユーモラス且つスリリングに描いています。

キッシンジャーの伝記という点では、一番まともなで、かつ広範囲にわ
たって書かれている本。キッシンジャーについて、基本的に批判的なス
タンスではあるが、評価すべき点は評価するというスタイル。一方的な
書き方ではないので比較的バランスが取れている。
欠点は、ニクソンに対して批判的なあまり、ニクソン時代の外交政策の
ほとんどをキッシンジャーに起因させてしまっている点かと。
