"Oops and Goofs" is a sequel of sorts to the author's earlier "Takes and Mistakes" (NHK Shuppan, 2004). Both books are funny--you'll laugh out loud--and heartwarming at the same time. What sets Elwood's books apart from others is her attitude: she writes as a participant in Japanese life, not merely an observer; and frequently the humour is at her own expense. There's not a whiff of disdain and no smart-alecky remarks either in her warm, friendly, sometimes bemused essays about learning to fit in, get along, and be happy in Japan. Whether you're a recent arrival or a long-term resident, don't miss these charming pieces. They're also fun to read and talk about with students.
