仕事柄海外に在住することが多かったのですが、その際言葉の通じない国々で病気にならない、自己管理の大切さを身をもって経験してきました。こういったチュロパシーの考え方セルフケアの大切さを考え、実践するためにとても役に立ちました。

アロマテラピーやハーブ、リフレクソロジーなど、単独で扱うわけでなく、身近な野菜や香辛料の薬効も多く扱う本書は、ホリスティックの名に恥じないと思う。ブームにのった健康法を「これやってみたい！」ではなく、生活を基本から見直したい人にはお勧め。風邪をひいて市販の薬を飲んで、ぐずぐず治らない…なんて症状も、もっと普段の生活から気をつけられるところはたくさんあるんだ、と気づかせてくれる本。掲載されているいろいろな処方は、お料理や工作感覚でとても楽しい。

キッチンにあるじゃがいもなどの野菜から、酢、酒、ヨーグルト、はちみつといったどう考えてもハーブではないが身近にありそうなものの薬効や応用レシピが載っているのはよいです。
ハーブも２７種類と少なめで当時（１９９９年２月初版）手に入りやすかったものに限っていますし、後半の応用レシピもこの２７種類で出来ます。
基礎中の基礎が載っています。

ただし、セントジョーンズワートを抗鬱／鎮痛の内服としてのせていますが、医薬品との併用の際は「医師と相談してください」的な記述は一切ありません。
このように、当時は本書記述だけでよかったのですが、今は違うというものが結構あります。
使い方を間違えると炎症が悪化するものも、あっけらからんと外用：消炎　と書いてあります。
最新の情報を他の書籍で補うなど、注意してください。
（大体さ、今は抗鬱であればパッションフラワーやカリフォルニアポピーなどをファーストチョイスするように載せるでしょう。）

本書で一番驚いた点は、「NHK」出版であるにもかかわらず、どこの製品かはっきり分かる写真が載っていることです。
