ポルトガル出身のノーベル賞作家の、たぶん代表作。

ふつう、失明というのは「光を失う」ことを指します。暗闇の世界に閉じ込められてしまうこと。これが「盲目」ということの意味です。

ところが、物語で問題となる奇病＝「白の闇」は「過剰な光に満たされてしまう」病気です。

明るすぎて、光に溢れすぎていて、そのためにかえって何も見えなくなる。

「光だけの世界」というと何か神の恩寵のようにも思えますが、そこで登場人物達は恐ろしい経験をすることになります。

光だけの闇の中で、登場人物達は、そして我々読者は、いったいどんな地獄を目撃する／しないことになるのでしょうか。

ノーベル賞作家ジョゼ・サラマーゴの寓話的な作品で、文体もコーテーション・マークがなく、地の文と会話の文との間に区切りがありません。従って、伝承的な話を口伝で語りかけているといった感じです。
物語自体は非常に読みやすく、次から次へと読ませる文章です。

内容は、「白い失明病」と言う伝染病により、人々は次々に見えなくなってしまいます。
最初は、隔離病棟に収容していたのですが、それを管理する人間も次々に目が見えなくなって行きます。

目が見えなくなった極限の世界で、人の理性や感情はどうなってしまうのか？
目が見えることが前提となっている現代社会の構造に於いて、人間は「狩猟時代」に戻ることが出来るのか？
究極の世界の話として、作者がこうした人間の本質とも言える問題にチャレンジしています。

１１月には、この作品の映画が公開されると言うことです。
この映像化されたパニック・サスペンスも楽しみです。

ある男が失明し、それはやがて周囲に伝染していく...

といった終末もの的な作品で、最初かなり楽しみに読みました。読み始めてすぐに思い出したのが、同様に世界中の人々が盲目になってしまうというトリフィド時代―食人植物の恐怖 (創元SF文庫)。「白の闇」が伝染病という設定に対し、「トリフィド」の方は、大流星群を見たため、という災害的なものが原因。ゆっくりと進んでいく伝染病と一気に訪れた災害。予備知識も何もなく、盲目状態に突き落とされるトリフィドに比べ、「盲目になった人」と、「まだなっていない人」が存在する白の闇の世界は、より人間の嫌らしさを露出させている。とりあえず、感染が疑われる人々と感染者（盲目になった人）を隔離し、閉じ込める政府。軍によって見張られた感染者たちは、脱走しようとすれば、銃撃も許可されており、怪我人、病人が発生しても、一切関知しない、という徹底振りである。突然眼が見えなくなった人々が、見知らぬ場所に閉じ込められれば、当然、一切が麻痺し...というわけで、汚物がころがり、食料の奪い合いが...

最後まで読ませるものはあるのだが、最後まで中心人物である医者の妻に違和感を感じ続けた。そして、最後にも。そこだけが残念。
