今まで絵は見るものであると思っていました。
イタリアで見た様々なルネッサンス絵画で頭がごちゃごちゃしている時にこの本に出会いました。読むように見る。まさしく絵は読むものとしてあったのです。できればイタリアへ行く前に読みたかった。
ボッティチェリ、ミケランジェロ、ダ・ビンチ　そうした絵を３倍楽しめること請け合いです。

中世・ルネサンス期の音楽・絵画には、さまざまなシンボライズされた「意味」がかくされており、絵画においてそれを解き明かす事を目的とした学問が「イコノロジー」である。著者は日本における著名な研究家であり、平易な文章でわかりやすく西洋美術の楽しみ方を教えてくれる。ただし、注意しなければならない点もある。とうのは、イコノロジーはあくまで人文科学であって自然科学ではない、という点である。簡単に言うと数量化できないので論理的に証明することが不可能だし、最良の解が一つに収束するわけでもない。つまりこの本に関しても、「なるほど、そういう解釈もできるのか」という程度にとどめておいたほうがよいだろう。科学的手法において前提となるのは「一次情報」だけである。レオナルド自身から、「この絵に描いてある子供はクロノスのメタファーである」などと聞くことが出来ない限り、人文科学はあくまで統計学的観点から構築された実証不可能な仮説にすぎないという事には思いを致しておかねばならない。

「絵の見方」は、個人の主観にまかされていると思われている。確かに、その考え方はまちがってはいない。しかし、この若桑先生の本を読んでからは、その考えかたにも変化を迫られることは間違い無い。

この本では、別な絵画の見方をわかりやすく、けれども、決して甘くなく教えてくれる。その見方とは、描かれた時代、歴史背景を踏まえながら見るというものである。 ここから先は、皆様にも一読して欲しいと思う。
