一般向けの強震動地震学の入門書ということだが，かなり読み応えのある内容だった．地震災害，震源，地下構造，強震観測，強震動予測など，強震動地震学の広い範囲をコンパクトながらもらさずカバーしている．また，数式を殆ど使っていないのも初学者には嬉しい．「震度とマグニチュード」「地震と地震動」「活断層と地表地震断層」など，紛らわしい用語の解説も詳しく，内容が高度な割に読みやすい．さすが日本の強震動研究をリードする豪華執筆陣の手によるものだ．
