本作は､認知心理学的記憶研究の第一人者(夫婦だが)による､極めて素晴らしい入門･啓発的教科書である。
　｢素晴らしい｣と推薦するからには､数々の美点を備えている。
　まず第一に､構成がしっかりしていることである。前半七章において､学問的研究を解説し､最終章では､研究結果の､日常への具体的応用を提案している。そして各章とも､分かりやすい導入部を経て､研究の必要性､研究結果の提示･解釈がなされ､章末ごとに､｢要約｣をすべて組み入れる､という方針が貫かれている。第二に､やさしく噛み砕いた文体なので､理解しやすく､また学術書としては驚くことに､ユーモアがあって飽きさせない。しかし､要点は抜かりなく､とても論理的に議論を積み上げている。第三に､実用するために必要となるモデルや結果のデータが､関連を見失われぬ書き方で示されている。もちろん､今から20年ほど前の書物なので､修正は必要かもしれない。そして最後に､訳者の良さが挙げられる。著者がモデルとした｢アトキンソンとシフリンの記憶貯蔵庫モデル｣に対する問題などを､訳注等用い､的確にサポートしてくれる。もちろん参考文献の脱落などない。
　まとめると､認知心理学を用いた記憶現象の知見が､一望できるということに､本書の美点がある。
　著者らは､ある論争に巻き込まれ､そちらばかりが注目されているが､本書や『目撃者』シリーズなどの入門･啓発書に対し､もう少し目を注ぐべきではないだろうか。
