本書は、いわゆる各分野の研究者が、自分の研究のダイジェストを書いていて、色んな講義をまとめて受けてる感じがします。それぞれが興味深いテーマを講義しているのですが、途中までは本としてのまとまりがないなぁと思って読んでいました。それがあとがきで一気に氷解。そういう意図でこのような構成になっていたのかと納得しました。一番面白かったのはあとがきかも。

これから大学で学ぶ人には是非このあとがきだけでも読んで欲しい。学び方のコツが分かります。後は興味によって目次を眺めるだけでも良いし、興味のある分野だけ読むのも良い読み方も良いと思います。

出版された当時は「１０年もすれば全く時代遅れになって使命を終えることを目指した？」はずの本書が十年以上現役でいることにまずうれしくも驚いた。

時間がたっても知的刺激は衰えていない（と私は思う）。歳をとって読み返したらとてもつまらなかった，という感想を持つ人は，成長した人だと思います。学校というのはそれほど変化にとんだ場ではありません。箱は同じで，毎年フレッシュな人が入り，それで若さをかろうじて保っているような，そんな微妙な場なのです。新たにこの本を手にする人が刺激を受けられるならそれでいいではありませんか。

当時話題になった、東京大学教養学部の「基礎演習」で使用されていた（されている？）テキスト。「知」の作法を学ぶための本。

私の読んだ時期が悪いせいかもしれないが（既卒）、各要素の連関性がわからず結論として何を指摘したかったのかがつかめなかった。ものごとには「このような理解の仕方もあるよ」ということを雑多に紹介しているように感じる。

とはいえ、大学１年生にとってはそれでも面白い発見があるのかもしれない。特に本書の中核である第U部では様々な「認識の技術」が紹介されているが、「フィールドワーク」による私たちの常識の打破や、たった数行の文章から本文全体のテーマを読み取る「解釈」は、学問の奥深さを私たちに教えてくれる。

それだけに、第U部の各項目の整合性に編者はもっと気を払ってもらいたかった。例えば、「構造」「比較」「関係」は、明らかに部分的な内容の一致を含んでいるが、これらは包含関係にあるのか、それとも独立したものとして捉えられるのか。また「統計」による分析と「モデル」による分析は並列して良いものか。できうることならば、ここで挙げられた「認識の技術」の実践的な活用方法について、もう一歩踏み込んで欲しい。

「知」の技術・作法を学ぶという姿勢に疑問を感じないわけではない。そこには「知」の矮小化が潜んでいないかという危惧がある。しかし、そのような問題をひとまず脇に置いておけば、大学で学ぶべき『知』とは何かについて知るための手頃な入門書であることは疑いない。「『賞味期限』がせいぜい数年」であると筆者が断っているが、現在でもまだまだ利用価値のある一冊である。（新版が出ているようであるが、評者はまだ読んでいないためコメントは差し控えたい）
