西條八十の初めての本格的な評伝が本書だと言うのには驚いた。フランス文学の教授、詩人として出発し、作詞家として童謡「かなりあ」から「東京行進曲」、「東京音頭」、「愛染かつら」、「青い山脈」、「王将」等、戦前、戦後の多くのヒット曲を作った。その作詞のエピソードによると、いつも苦もなく言葉が浮かんでくるようで、まさに天性の詩人である。しかし、学界、詩壇は、、ランボー研究、詩人としての多大な業績を無視してきた。著者は、庶民の心情を詩として定着させた西條を「大衆化されたロマン主義」の中心人物としている。日本人が西條八十から受けた多大な恩をおもい出させてくれる優れた伝記である。

西條八十作詞、古賀政男作曲の数え切れないほどの歌謡曲、「東京音頭」をはじめとする日本各地のご当地民謡の数々は戦前、戦中育ちの我われの郷愁をそそる。
その一面、早稲田大学の文学部教授としてフランス文学を教えていたことは、余り知られていない。
フランス文学における学問的業績も、ただ大衆受けする歌の作詞者であるという一点においてのみ、学会からは無視された。しかし、西條は歌は一般大衆と共にありとの態度を貫いた。
沢山の歌謡曲、民謡、童謡の引用は懐かしくもあり、現代の散文的へたくそな作詞家と較べて、西條八十の作詞がいかに優れていたか、あらためて認識させられた。
しかし、詩壇における派閥の流れの詳細なる説明は、学問的には価値があるものなのだろうが、人間西條八十をしりたい読者にとっては、いささか退屈な側面である。
