色々出ていますが自分的にはこの中公文庫の外装が一番好きです。京極夏彦作品の中でも一際美しいのはこの「嗤う伊右衛門」だと思います。従来のお岩さんのイメージを打ち崩す儚い美しさがこの本のお岩さんにはあります。日本語は美しいです。世界に誇れる言葉である、という事を、この本で実感しました。これからまた夏ですし、美しいような物悲しいような、古きよき雅な、日本の魂を揺さぶる大人の夏の怪談に浸って見てはいかがでしょうか？

どうして、この人が描く魑魅魍魎の世界はこんなに美しいのでしょう。
漆黒の闇を舞台に、血の赤や肌の白さや蚊帳の朧さなどが際立って、
まるで色鮮やかな絵巻物をみているかのようです。
日本古来の言葉を駆使した文体は、まるで香を焚き染めたかのように匂い立ち、
独特の言い回しや体言止めの多用が、語り手の息遣いがつたわってくるかのごとく
臨場感をかもし出しています。
日本のお化けの物語をこんなに品よく格調高く描ける人は、この人以外に
いないのではないでしょうか。大好きな本のひとつです。

最近の読書では京極夏彦にはまっている。映画にもなった「嗤う伊右衛門」。この作品は傑作だと思う。四谷怪談「お岩さん」を下敷きにした物語だけれど、怪異をすべて人の為した業で説明できるようにしている点で一種のミステリーとしても楽しめる。しかし。それ以前に岩と伊右衛門の切ないラブストーリーであり、登場人物それぞれの業が絡み合い織り成す様々な愛憎劇とそれらの背後に潜む悪の権化の謀略が、多くの人を死に至らしめる様はシェイクスピヤ悲劇を思わせる。もともと歌舞伎の題材ゆえ演劇的要素を感じるのかも。ご一読を。
