遍歴を重ねた主人公バルダミュは、パリの場末に住み着き医者となるが―人生嫌悪の果てしない旅を続ける主人公の痛ましい人間性を、陰惨なまでのレアリスムと破格な文体で描いて「かつて人間の口から放たれた最も激烈な、最も忍び難い叫び」と評される現代文学の傑作巨篇。


著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

セリーヌ
筆名。1894年、パリ西北方の都市クールブヴォワに生まれ、貧しさのなかで独学を続けて医師免状を得る。第一次大戦で騎兵軍曹として武勲をたて、復員後、国連事務局に勤め、各国を遍歴してから、パリの場末で医師を開業。1932年、本書で一挙に作家の名声を確立したが、反資本・反ユダヤ主義の立場からフランスの現状を痛罵した時事論集などのために、第二次大戦後、戦犯に問われ、亡命先のデンマークで投獄された。特赦で帰国したが、61年、不遇と貧困のうちに歿し、その墓石には“否”の一語だけが刻まれた

生田 耕作
大正13年(1924)、京都に生まれる。京大仏文科卒。京大名誉教授。平成6年10月死去(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

セリーヌの「夜の果てへの旅」はメジャーな作家ではない故に、日本ではあまり知られていませんが、私の読書体験においても大きな位置を占めるものです。現代において、将来への漠然とした不安や焦燥感といった感覚がある、という人は一読をお勧めします。内容については、個々人で感じるものが違うでしょうから、あえて触れませんが、私は大学の時に読んで、人生観が少し変わった気がします。もう一度、きちんと読み直したいと思える、数少ない一冊です。

澁澤龍彦氏の文章で本書を知りました。
現実逃避の「自分探し」が氾濫する現代。
自己の存在を考えさせてくれる本でした。

生田氏の翻訳も、非常に切れがよく
わかりやすい文章で、読みやすいです。
ひたすら難解に、暗くなりそうな内容を
歴史や政治情勢に疎い人間でも理解でき、
内容に入り込めるものにしてくれています。

村上龍氏の作品を読んでいて本書を知った。
「ひきこもり」という「ひきこもれる」時代に、セリーヌの生きた時代とつい比較してしまう。
実はセリーヌは「戦った人」なのではないか。
自分の内部と戦うことは実にキツい。
そういうことの表明が本書だと思う。
暗く読んでもいいけど、読んだら扉を開けて戦いに行かないとダメだと思う。
そこまで恵まれた時代でありこの国なんだから。
