この作品は私にとって、吉田戦車さんの「伝染るんです」、さくらももこさんの「コジコジ」以来のショックだった。完全にはまってしまった。しばらく地上に帰ってこられないような、不思議な感覚・・・
最初、あまりの簡潔な「~だ。~である。」調にとまどったけれど、すぐにその摩訶不思議ワールドにどっぷり浸かってしまった。

梨をひたすら食らう不思議な物体、男女の営みが旨く行かないと相談しにくるカッパ、つぼをこすると出てくる、痴情のもつれに悩む女、そして友人の「ウテナさん」・・・終わったかと思いきや、またもや登場するおかしな生き物達に、何度もブッと吹き出した。

どこかもの悲しくいじらしい、愛らしい生き物達と出会ってなぜか、「生きてるっていいなぁ~」としみじみ思いました。川上さんに、会ってみたい。

この小説には、熊やら河童やら人魚が当たり前のように登場する。そして主人公は、そのことにたいして驚いたりしない。そこにいちいちツッコミを入れたくなるような人には向かない小説。

川上弘美さんの作品を読むのは初めてだったが、本当にいい小説だと思った。
まず、主人公が素直な普通の人であるところに好感が持てる。最近の小説の主人公は、やたら斜にかまえたひねくれ人間が多くてうんざりしていたので、この小説を読んで心が洗われた。

「神様」でほのぼのして、「夏休み」でしんみりして、「花野」で切なくなって、「河童玉」で笑って、「クリスマス」でも笑って、「星の光は昔の光」でいろいろ考えさせられて、「春立つ」で不思議な気分になって、「離さない」でゾッとして、「草上の昼食」で号泣した。
いろいろ楽しめて、とってもお得だ。

川上弘美と言えば、生物と人間の艶かしさをつなげた
独特の言葉で語られる世界が一部のファンに支持されていたように思うが
この作品では“天才！川上弘美ここに在り”ということを
ファンでない人にも分からせてしまう作品になったと思う。

言葉の選択とリズムに最初は「ハ？」という人も多いだろうが

肩の力が上手い具合に抜けている文章とやさしさとやらしさは
“天才！”としかあらわしようがない。
“癒し”という言葉は嫌いだが“前を向いて歩いていこうよ”と
胡散臭いことをしきりに語ろうとする本なんかよりも
ずっとずっと心の平安を取り戻せます。
