　物語の時代設定は、隋王朝の勃興からその滅亡まで。主人公である花木蘭は、年老いた父の代わりに、煬帝の起こした第一次高句麗討伐軍に女性の身でありながら、男装して従軍し、その後、衰退していく隋王朝に襲い掛かる様々な反乱軍との激戦に遭遇する。そこでの男装の麗人の活躍の痛快な活躍というのが、本書の見所だ。　
　筆者は、漢文テイストを感じさせる引き締まった硬質の文体で、種々の歴史書・漢詩を自在に引用し、この時代の歴史・文化、多種多様な人々、暴君・君側の奸・野心家・誠忠清廉の士そして、武略に秀でた英雄たちの姿を活写する。特に、合戦シーンは臨場感を感じさせ、迫力がある。長年、エンターテイメントを書き続けた人だけあって物語の緊張と緩和の絶妙なバランス、歴史的事実に作家的想像を加える作劇技術の高さには瞠目せしむるものがある。叙述も整理されており、きびきびと面白い話を読ませてくれる。
　本書はまさに、歴史好きには堪えられない一作だろう。

女の子（って言ったら失礼かも知れない…）が父親の代わりに男装して煬帝の軍に従軍する、というお話で、実はディズニーでも映画化されています。朋友に女とも男ともつかぬ複雑な気持…戦士として働きながらも沸きだつ故郷への思い…田中芳樹の創竜伝、隋唐演義のすがすがしさが好きな人や「始皇帝暗殺」などサスペンスが好きな人、必見です！

ディズニーの映画を見て、このお話のことを知りました。

女の子が男装して戦場に赴くという自分好みの設定に惹かれて呼んだのですが、昨今やたら表面を撫でるだけの時代小説が氾濫している中で、この小説はその時代背景が丁寧に描写されていて、主人公の生きた世界が奥行きを持って感じられました。ただ、時代描写が多い分、肝心の主人公の内面がよくわからなかった。普通、男に混じって戦場生活をおくったらもっと大変なことがたくさんあるに違いない、と考えてしまうのですが。田中 芳樹 氏によると、そのように考える人は、はじめからこのお話を読むべきではないということです。
