主人公は、満州国にあった建国大学に入学してきた日蒙ハーフの青年ウンボルト、という時点でかなりマニアックではあるが歴史好きにとっては非常に興味魅かれるものがある。満州国の理想と現実や、当時の日本の中国政策、暗躍する日本の特務機関と将校、反日ゲリラ、「東洋のマタハリ」などなど、当時を彩る様々な要素がごった煮されており、その登場人物はかなりデフォルメ化されてはいるものの、刺激的である。満州に興味があるのなら、読んで損はない、全８冊。

　満州国は日本人にとっては現実逃避の場所であり、昭和の夢と可能性そのものだった。中国側から見れば、満州国は「偽満」で、石原莞爾たちはただの強欲な侵略者に過ぎないかもしれない。けれどそこには、あらゆる民族が平等・自由に暮らせる国という理想があり、その大学にはガンジーやトロツキーの招聘というプロジェクトまでがあった。
それらの理想は結局は絵に描いた餅で、結局は満州を守るために日本は日中戦争という泥沼に巻き込まれていったのだとしても、そこに生きた人々のことを、忘れてはいけないのではないか。
この漫画には、満州の「虹色の」夢の美しさとともに、その現実の醜さ、過酷さ、絶望的な暗さが描きこまれている。青年ウムボルトはやや理想的なキャラクターに傾きすぎている気がするが、日本軍人と蒙古のハーフという設定でなければこのように自由に、日本側・抗日側の視点を行き来できなかったのだろう。
読んでいて、刺激を受ける作品だ。素直に、もっと読まれてもいい物語と思ふ。特に、今のように、中国で反日感情？が盛り上がっているときには、近代史の複雑さを、少しでも心で理解するためには…。

5.0 out of 5 stars ノモンハン事件を描いた野心的な作品, 2005/9/14
全巻を通じての前半はともかく、後半は面白い。
司馬遼太郎も断念した、ノモンハン事件を描いている。
特になぜこの事件が起こったのかの解釈が斬新である。
「『今事変』の根本的解決に貢献せんとするにあり」
この一文に新たな解釈を付け加えている。
多くの歴史家からは否定的な解釈内容であるようだが、
もし事実であれば大変なことかもしれない。
今現在も謎が多いとされるこの事件(戦争が正しい解釈)
に作者なりの究明を試みた野心的な作品である。
