「歴史には興味あるけど、世界史はよくわからない人のための入門編」としては好適だと思います。ヘンリーだのエドワードだのって何人もいて、誰が何をしたヒトだかわからないから、なんか小説とか読みづらいの~っていうタイプといえばいいでしょうか♪
で、すでに英国史をお勉強されているヒトにはおオススメしません（笑）また、もうちょっと書き込んでほしい箇所と作者が好きな箇所のバランスが悪いところもあるので、星マイナスしちゃいました。

さて、この本ではあまり表舞台に出てこなかった王達もすべて記載されているので、おおまかな流れがつかみ易くなります。王妃の記述も少なからずあり、それがまた大体政略結婚ですから当時の周辺国との関係も幾分かわかります（すべてではないですよ~）。
例えば、私はこちらを読んでから「ブレイブハート」を観ました。もちろん映画のイザベル妃の行動は創作されたものに過ぎないのですが、やはり史実を知っていると興味深く楽しめました。
また、小説で結構格好良かったリチャード獅子心王も、母であるアキテーヌ女公の話を経由すると...イメージが(笑)
更に、フランスとの密着な関係を知るとばら戦争の見方もまた変わるし、シェイクスピア作品もより深く味わえます。

こんなカンジで「フランス王国史話」も誰方が書いてくれないかしらと思いつつ。

この本はイングランドだけでなく、スコットランドにも触れている数少ない本です。大抵の本はイングランド側に偏ってしまっています。また王妃や王の愛妾に関してもほとんど触れられていません。
適当な入門書を読んでもう一歩踏み込みたいという方におすすめです。
単調かも知れませんが、ところどころ伝説の話が出てきます。眉に唾するものから、興味深いものまで。エピソードがあるからこの本は面白いのだと思いました。

私の高校時代からの愛読書。当時は愛蔵版で重たかったけれど、今文庫で読める貴方は幸運です。英国王室史といえばシェイクスピアとも縁浅からず、これを読めばかの文豪の歴史劇もなお一層の理解が深まることでしょう。それから日本でも放送してますが、本国英国でのミリオネアでは王室史は必須問題！これで英国でミリオネアになろう！？
