難しく堅苦しいと思われがちな古典作品も、坂田靖子というフィルターを通すと、こんなに面白く分かりやすくなるのです。空間の利いた絵が、読む者の感性を刺激して、原作の深みを増します。あとがきに「借り受けた資料をほとんど使わないままにお仕事をしてしまった」とありましたが、そうすることで原作の束縛を逃れ、のびやかな物語世界が広がったように思います。美術書の中で畏まってよそよそしく見えた紋様も、坂田靖子が描くと、こんなに破天荒でユーモアに溢れた意匠だったのかと再認識できます。

コメディ、SF、ミステリ、ラブロマンスと変幻自在の坂田靖子だが、「磯の貝に聴いた話」などの日本を含めたアジアの昔話あたりが個人的には一番気に入っている。あのぼけっぷりとめちゃくちゃっぷりは、古典の漫画化にぴったりじゃん！と期待して読んだ。

でも、イマイチでした。あとがきが一番おもしろかった。

ところどころに見られる「坂田節」は魅力的だが、「堤中納言物語」の漫画化として読むと「えぇ？こんな話だったか？」と違和感を感じる。「虫めずる姫君」で、おなごたちが「ああ~」とか「キャーキャーキャー」とか叫んだりするのだ。私のイメージだと、この時代のおなごは「キャー」なんて大口開けて叫ばない気がする（「あれまあ」とか言う気がする・笑）。もしこれが、平安時代を舞台にした坂田靖子オリジナルだったら、「キャー」とか言ってくれても一向に構わないし、むしろ楽しいと思うのだけれど。

それから、漫画と言うよりは、ダイジェスト版に絵をつけただけというような作品も中にはあって、それを漫画としてみせる必然性が感じられなかった。

というわけで、坂田靖子の作品としてはソレナリだけど、「堤中納言物語」の漫画化としてはイマイチ。『堤中納言物語」を知りたければ、ダイジェスト版とか現代語訳とかを読んだ方がいいかも。

古典を学ぶ必要はもう無い人間なので、純粋にオリジナルの漫画として読みました。勉強目的で読もうという方は、「堤中納言物語」の大体の雰囲気が解る位だと思っていただければ、良いのではないでしょうか。途中、一部キャラが見分けにくい話もありましたが、シンプルな筆致でここまで平安時代の装束（色は白いことが多いのですが、あまり気になりません）や小道具、季節や時間帯を表現できるのは凄いと思います。
