「異国奇談」というタイトルですが、さてどこに「異国」の雰囲気があるのでしょうか？「独探」は舞台は最初から最後まで日本です。たしかに狂言回しとしては、イタリア系のオーストリア人が登場しますが、最終的には、この狂言回しつまり現実の西欧に対する幻滅が前面に出てきます。もっとも、最後にタイトルの余韻を示唆するところは意外な展開ですが。次の2作はインド並びにインド人との関わりを持つ作品ですが、どちらも不思議な作品です。「玄弉三蔵」は必ずしもオリエンタリズム満載の異国情緒ものという印象はうけません。このように解釈されてしまうインドの現実面の現象ははかなり最近まで（60年代）存在したのではというのが私の実感です。「秦淮の夜」は作者の中国旅行をベースとした作品ですが、これは、このような個人的な経験が実際に文章に表現されたという意味では稀有の作品ですが、必ずしも舞台が中国である必要はないようです。「西湖の月」や「天鵞絨の夢」も同じような系統の作品ですが、構成の妙味と事件の連鎖という観点からは、後の推理小説の萌芽でもあり興味深い作品です。つまるところ異国はたしかに異国ですが、必ずしも選択された異国である必要はなかったようです。あくまでも谷崎の視角は女性へのエロチシズムなのです。実際に谷崎を西欧に長期に滞在させたときの反応がどうだっただろうかというのは答えのない仮説です。

「彼方への憧れ」と後書きにあるように、異国綺談の副題で集められた短篇六作を収録している。作者の西欧人との交際から生まれたらしい「独探」は、後に「人魚の嘆き」中での物語に引用される要素があるものの、話としてあまり面白みはなかった。同じく執筆前に詳細な資料研究の後が見受けられる「玄弉三蔵」は題名に主題はなく肩透かしを食らわされる。しかし、この作品は次の「ハッサン・カンの妖術」の物語が展開する上で、マティラム・ミスラなる登場人物と谷崎氏が出会うきっかけとして重要な役割を果たしている。

この「ハッサン・カンの妖術」は収録作中の白眉である。ジンという魔神の能力、その妖術によって実体から遊離した存在が涅槃界を駆け巡り、恋しい母性への逢瀬へと結実されるまでの描写はまさに神業ものである。必読の傑作としてオススメ。その他、中国旅行からモチーフを得たらしい三作中では、「天鵞絨の夢」が互いに関連する奴隷達の告白を借りた謎解きをするような展開がユニークで、当時の作者の実験的な意欲と旺盛な想像力がうかがえる佳品である。
