　1995年に日本放送出版協会から出た『吟醸の国 イギリス−その気配りとしたたかさに触れて』の改題・文庫化。
　著者は1991-94年に英国大使を務めた人物。本書では、大使時代の体験が紹介され、イギリスと日本の未来について語られている。
　大使としての貴重な体験の数々が描かれている。大使ならではの特殊な儀礼、イギリスの貴人たちとの社交、日英間での折衝の日々。しかも、非常に観察眼と洞察力に恵まれた人物であり、「イギリス」というものの裏の裏まで読みとっていくところがすごい。大使としても、物事を因果関係で把握し、先を読んで行動していく。外交官の仕事について、かいま見ることが出来た。
　自慢話が多い点が欠点か。
