本書は1950-1960年代に著者がアジア諸国を調査・旅行した経験を踏まえて、ユーラシア大陸における諸文明の見取り図を実証的・生態的に描いたものだ。著者は世界における日本の位置付けを熟考し、東洋・西洋という慣習的区分を乗りこえ、ユーラシア大陸を高度な近代産業文明の段階に達した第一地域、およびそうでない第二地域とに区分する。そして、日本をユーラシア東側における唯一の第一地域として、ユーラシア西側の西欧諸国と並行的に進化してきたのだという。第一地域はその特徴として、封建制の存在と早い時期からの市場経済の発達があげられ、第二地域はその特徴として、古くから文明が栄えて専制的帝国を築いたが、封建制を発達させることなく、絶えず遊牧民による破壊的圧力にさらされ続けたことがあげられる。

私自身の海外旅行の体験からいっても、例えば中国人とアラブ人の行動様式に多くの共通性があること、日本人と西欧人とに共通する資本主義・市場経済への適応度の高さ等、本書に納得できることは多い。また本書の図式によれば、日本人と中国人の文化的差異が、西欧人とアラブ人の違いに匹敵するほど大きいことになるが、これもよく納得できる。ただ、壮大な理論としては当然かも知れないが、複雑な世界をあまりに単純化していることや、日本人としての著者のプライドなのか、日本を過大評価する傾向が少々感じられる。しかしながら、本書は欧米先進国との比較ばかりだったそれ以前の日本論と違い、ユーラシア諸文明の中の日本文明という新しい視点を切り開いたことで、発表当時から大きな反響を呼んだことを納得することができた。

固体とその発生地の環境条件との相互作用を考察する生態学的方法論をもとに、地球上の文明の比較がされていました。

地理的・時間的に広範に物事を見る想像力、事象を分析するための綿密な方法論、複数の学問領域を越える学際的研究など内容以外にも多いに学ぶことが多い好著です。本書には筆者の各種論文・公演が整理されているので、筆者の生態史観そのものの変遷（Succession）が見えます。

筆者の意図ではないにしろ、ダーウィンの「進化」論が西欧文明中心主義者を支えたように、生態学をもとにした筆者の文明の「変遷」論は今後の多極主義者の支えになる歴史的な意味をもつ論文なのではないでしょうか。

　非常に有名な本であり、単純な発展モデルの歴史観が中心だった時代に本書が与えたインパクトは多大なものだったと思う。私は不勉強であるため、現在本書がどのように評価されているのかは知らないが、今読んでも面白い本であると思った。筆者が自然科学者であったこともあるのかもしれないが、筆者の知識人論は非常に面白いと思う。ただ、精密な理論書というよりはアイディアのスケッチといった趣の本であるため、徹底的に納得したという感じにはなれないのが残念である。いずれ筆者の別の本を読んでみたいと思う。
