題名の通り16つの話が載せられていますが、どの話も一度考えさせられる内容です。
特に「21世紀に生きる君たちへ」という話は、私たちがどのようにすべきか、どう生きていけば良いかということを何度読んでも考えさせられます。
小学校の教科書に載っている文章もあるので、どの年齢の人にも読みやすい本ですので、是非一度読んで見て下さい。

重箱の隅をつつく様で嫌らしいのですが、この本の中で中岡慎太郎が姉小路公知に福沢諭吉の『西洋事情』を進呈したように書いてありますが、これは姉小路卿でなく岩倉卿か三條卿では?(宮地佐一郎『中岡慎太郎』中公新書参照)。福沢先生のこの本が出た時、姉小路卿は既に暗殺されている筈。司馬先生にしてこのミスがあるとは。でももちろんこんな小さな事で本の内容は一切損なわれてはいません。ごめんなさい。

　本書は司馬遼太郎の１６の文（エッセイ？コラム？）を集めた本である。
　本書の最後は「二十一世紀に生きる気たちへ」で締めくくられている。
　「二十一世紀に生きる君たちへ」は司馬遼太郎が描いた唯一の児童向け文章として有名だ。
　これはとても素晴らしいのだが、本書を読んで一番感じたのは「この本自体が『二十一世紀に生きる』人間に向けて作られた文章なのではないか」ということだ。

　細かくは言わないが、本書を読むと「素晴らしい二十一世紀を創らねばいけない。それが司馬さんのメッセージにこたえることだ」と思えてくる。

　司馬遼太郎を読んだことがない人、時代小説を読まない人、本はあまり読まないという人すべての人に読んでもらいたい。
