この文章、この笑い！！彼の作品が読めること、そのオモシロさがわかること、これだけで「日本人でよかった！」と本気で思えます。食べたいものリストなんて・・・こんなもの書いてこんなに面白いのは彼だけではないかしら？

すごいわがままなのに「愛されキャラ」・・・人間としても「文章家」としてもこれほど優れたひとはもう２度と出ない。敢えて言えば、赤瀬川原平さんや中島らもさんからすこし似たものを嗅ぎとってしまうような気がするのですが。

モノや人を見る眼がものすごく鋭い。それは世の中の不条理まで見通してしまうから、彼の小説はあんな不思議で幻想的なのではないかしら。エッセイとはまた一味違う小説も、ぜひ読まれるべし。

5.0 out of 5 stars 数少ない、旧かなで読める百けん先生の本。昭和初期にタイムスリップしたい人にも。, 2004/6/18
この本、ずっと手に入らなかったので、再版されて嬉しいのは私だけではありますまい。表紙の題字は百けん先生の直筆、昭和21年の初版本からとったもの、文体は旧かな、解説は"ヒマラヤ山系"こと、平山三郎さん。見事ファンの心をとらえる本であります。ファンのみならず、戦中、戦後すぐの食生活、先生の幼少時代に食べた、岡山ならではのお料理など、楽しい随筆がたくさん入っているので、昭和の始めの日本の食生活に興味のある人は必読ですよ。私は先生が終戦後、ジャガコロを作るときに使っていた代用油(本物の油じゃないのよね?)、マゾラ油って一体なんなのか知りたいです。

ただただおなかがへっている。 しょうがないからノートに食べたいものを羅列して書いてみる。（百間にならってときどきわたしがしてること。）

とてもとてもものがなくて、ほしいものがほとんど手に入らない戦後という時代に、なんだかその状況さえも、旅人にように興味津々で、書き綴っているそのすがたは、ただのくいしんぼうかそれとも赤瀬川源平風に言えば宇宙人なのか。ただいえるのは彼の文章は突出してクールである。
