吉本氏の本には肯定的な評価のほうが多いようなので、
あえてあまり評価できなかった自分の意見を投稿してみます。

つぐみというワガママなお姫さまの奏でるノイズが凄まじかったのは印象的でしたが、
あとは正直よく分かりませんでした。描写が淡々とし過ぎていて、怖かったです。
どうして吉本氏はこんなに冷淡でうるさい文が書けるのでしょうか。
読むとストレスが溜まる文章です。

描写はとても美しいです。海に行きたくなりました。

けれど主人公がひたすらつぐみを美しく描写するばかりで、当のつぐみから一体何を感じ取れば良いのか「?」でした。
今となっては病弱なつぐみが落とし穴掘って熱だした話としてしか認識できていません。
最後のつぐみの手紙も読者への意図がよくわかりません。
吉本ばななさんのハードラックやキッチンは好きですが、この作品は読者を置いてきぼりにしているよなあと思いました。

友達にすすめられてこの本を手にとりました。吉本ばななさんをはじめて読んだのは『白河夜船』だったので、大人しめの純文学ではなく、こんなにいたずらで、清清しい、物語主導のものも書いているんだと少しびっくり。知らなかった自分が悔やまれます。

読んでいる最中に、無性に、ありもしない自分の海で過ごした郷愁みたいなものを掻きたてられます。私は、幼少時代を海で過ごしたわけじゃないけど、この作品を読むと、学校や親や未熟な恋なんかに支えられ、保護されていた時代の、自分の透き通るようなあの、何といえばいいかわからない寂しさやワクワクや友情や愛情が、よみがえってくるような気がします。
例えば放課後の学校の校庭でブランコをこいで友達と語り合ったことや、はじめて男の子と手をつないだり、夏祭りに出かけた時のことが、つぐみとまりあ、恭一、陽子という登場人物を追うことで、なんだか切実に思い出されてくるのです。

そしてその頃に対する気持ちは、まりあが語る静かな口調に、実に絶妙に表現されていて、ぞくっとしてしまう。

かけがえのない、二度と取り戻せない、本当にはかない煌く瞬間を、吉本ばななさんという人は、それはそれは丁寧に書く人だ、と思いました。
読んだ直後、本当に涼やかな気持ちになって、青春の思い出がひとつ増えたような感覚がしました。そして同時に、海が見たい、海に潜りたい、そう強く思わせる傑作でした。
