『スティル・ライフ』と出会ったのは高校生の受験勉強の時でした。現国の問題集の問題としてとりあげられていて（抜粋は雪のシーンだったと思うけど）、その文章を読んでその清清しい新鮮さ、文体の透明感に感動し、完成された小説として今すぐ読みたいという思いに駆られ、勉強の手を止め夢中で本屋までその本を探しに自転車で走りました。受験勉強中ということもあったのか、関係ないのかは不明だけど必死に本屋で見つけて読んだ文庫の『スティル・ライフ』はすごく心を潤してくれました。読んでいる途中も読み終わった後も喉だけでなく、精神的にもまるで清らかな水で癒されたような錯覚がしました。今もその時初めて買った文庫本を持っていて、（８年も前に買ってもうボロボロになっているけど）毎年２回くらいは読み返しています。何十回読んでも毎回新鮮な気分にさせてくれます。

染色工場でアルバイトをしているぼくは、ひょんなことから同僚の佐々井と懇意になる。佐々井が工場を辞めても交流は続き、あるとき佐々井から奇妙な依頼ごとを受け・・・。

人と自然の関係についての考察が多い池澤氏ですが、この小説もそれが底に流れるテーマだと思います。下手な理屈は捨てて、自分の感性だけで世界を見たとき、自然はいろいろな姿を見せてくれるよ、そんなメッセージを受け取りました。優しい気持ちになり、生き物としての自分が甦ってくる小説です。

所収のもう一篇、「ヤー・チャイカ」も素敵です。

「音のない音楽を聴いている」というのがふと浮かんだ印象です。

池澤夏樹氏の著作を読むのは恥ずかしながらこれが初めてなんですが、とても印象的でした。なんといっても「スティル・ライフ」の書き出しの2ページでググッと彼の世界に引き込まれた気がします。とはいえ、決して強引に読者を引き込もうと無理をしているわけでもなく、どちらかと言えば淡々と静かに物語が進んでいく感じに強い印象を受けました。

特に冒頭の部分や、途中で出てくる風景の描写の部分（「スティル・ライフ」の雪の描写や「ヤー・チャイカ」のテレシコワの宇宙飛行の描写など）がとても印象的で、読み終わっても何度も何度も読み返し、声に出してみたりしていました。
