現在、グルメブ-ムは少し落ち着いてきたが、この本はその始まりの時に書かれた物で、日本各地の食文化を紹介した物である。これを読むと日本人がどのような食生活をしてきたかの原点を探ると共に、現在の食文化がどのような物かが分かってくると共に、日本各地の食文化の変遷が分かる。

　1984年にJTB出版局から出た単行本の文庫化。
　鹿児島の薩摩揚げ、下仁田のコンニャク、讃岐のうどん、秋田のしょっつる鍋など、日本各地の郷土料理を食べ歩いた本。美味しそうなものも多いが、蜂の子御飯とか三陸のホヤとか毛色の変わった食べ物もあり、玉村氏がぎょっとしながら食べているさまも面白い。
　ただ、玉村氏の著作にしては突っ込んだ調査がなされておらず、蘊蓄も少なめ。ちょっと物足りなかった。
　笑ってしまったのは「文庫版あとがき」。食べ歩きにまつわる苦労話が披露されており、（それに付き合わされる奥さんに）同情してしまった。
