作品の内容自体の圧倒的な素晴しさについては、多くのレビュアーの方が絶賛している通りなので、私に付け加える言葉はありません。芦屋川を中心に整然とひらけた、そして凛としたたたずまいを四季を通じて湛える芦屋、そして神戸市東灘区の山の手の街並みを愛してやまない人にとっては、必読の書と言ってよいでしょう。さて、本書を文庫版で購入する時、３分冊になっている新潮文庫版を選ぶか、１冊にまとめている中央文庫版を選ぶか、迷うところです。混雑する通勤電車で少しずつ読むしか時間がとれない人は３分冊の方を選ばざるを得ないでしょう。こちらの中央文庫版の方はさすがに解説を含めて９３６ページというボリュームですが、カバーは昭和２１−２３年刊細雪の表紙絵を採用しており、また、数は多くありませんが挿絵が挿入されていて、時代背景の雰囲気をかもし出してくれるので、本書が二度、三度と読みたくなる本であることを考えると、この中央文庫版がお薦めです。なお、市川崑監督の映画は、話を昭和１３年の１年だけに限り、エピソードも順番を変えたり、削除したり等していますが、本書で描かれた日本の古き良き文化の視覚化という点で圧倒的な成功を収めており、ＤＶＤでご覧になると、益々本作品の虜になること請け合いです。

改めて日本の文化の素晴らしさを教えてくれた本です。登場人物の心理描写が細かく書かれていて、まるで登場人物達が実際に存在するのではないかと錯覚してしまうほどでした。話の内容はきわめて日常的で、度々事件は起こるものの、大抵は家族の普段の生活が描かれているだけなのに、こんなにも面白いのは不思議です。谷崎氏の文章は読んでいて気持ちいいほど美しくてなめらかです。何度も読み返したくなる素敵な場面が沢山あって、一回読むだけではもったいない本です。

　古き良き日本の香りと、華がある作品です。そのため戦争中は雑誌連載が中止になったりしましたが、谷崎は防空壕の中で本作を執筆したそうです。
　その芸術的信念には、色々と見習うことが多いと思います。
　今ではあまり見られない4姉妹という設定ですが、彼女達の仲が良いのも素晴らしいです。
　昭和13年に実際に起きた阪神大水害の様子も迫力満点です。
　現代の我々が失ったものが、この作品にはあると思います。
