１９世紀英国の小説。上品でいてそれでいて気さくなユーモア小説・兼・旅行小説です。皮肉もたっぷりなのに素直に笑える名品です。
全体にリズム感があって読んでいて楽しめます。これが翻訳とは信じられないほどです。翻訳にありがちな不自然な文体や表現はどこにもありません。まさに「名訳」です！

なかなか楽しめました。三人共自分が可愛くて、身勝手なところがわかりやすくてよろしい（笑）。そういう性格が引き起こす混乱と『マーフィーの法則』的なお笑い満載で、優雅で気品漂う印象だったボートの河遊びがモンティ・パイソンに連なる英国伝統のユーモア溢れるスラプスティックになってました。特におかしいのが、ハリスの言動でしたね。ハムトン・コートの迷路事件や、コミックソングの件や、深夜の白鳥との格闘場面など、勘違いに上塗りするような妙な自信が巻き起こす騒動に笑いました。

三人の英国紳士と一匹の犬が、休息と気分転換のためにボートでテムズ川に漕ぎ出そうと決意したことからはじまる騒動と、その顛末をユーモラスに描いた作品です。全１９章の小説ですが、実際にボートに乗り込むまでにたっぷり５章が費やされるなど、枝葉の多い物語となっています。このため、これといった粗筋は無いとも言え、本をどこから開いても楽しく読むことができる内容になっています。通勤図書館向きの一冊かもしれません。

テムズ川流域の名所案内、英国の歴史、文化の紹介という側面もありますが、読者の笑いを誘うことが主たる目的だと思います。笑いのポイントは、人間の滑稽さです。権力を皮肉るような場合は少なく、着眼点はあくまでも英国一般市民の生活に置かれています。物語の語り部である主人公の話は「ひどい目にあった時の話」ばかりなのですが、ひどい目に遭った理由の大半が彼や彼を取り巻く人々の虚栄心にあるので、「そういうことなら自分も多少は身に覚えがある」と苦笑交じりに共感することができます。
