「人間は考える葦である」とのあまりに有名なフレーズは、その前後を知ることで、感動を
果てしなく増幅させる。パスカルのことばにしばし耳を傾けてみよう。
　曰く、「人間は一本の葦でしかない、自然の中で最も弱く、しかし、考える葦である。……
宇宙が人間を押しつぶそうとも、人間はなお己を殺すものよりも高貴なものであり続ける
だろう。なぜなら、人間は己が死することを、そして、宇宙が人間に勝るということを
知っているから。宇宙は何も知らない」。

　読みどころはそれだけではない。「パスカルの賭け」なるあの議論が披露されるのもこの
テキスト。自然natureとはすなわち人為に他ならぬとの洞察は見事。ページをそれとなく
めくれば、あまりに端的で、あまりに鋭いアフォリズムがそこかしこに鏤められている。

　死を想え Memento mori。
　狂気と天才は紙一重、ということばはパスカルにこそふさわしい。鮮血の苦悩を注ぎつつ、
愚直なまでに知を以って、己を切り裂き駆け抜けた生涯、宇宙に対する優越を謳う、まさに
その知を以って。
　そんな胸の詰まるまでの苦悩、孤独、儚い希望が凝縮された感動的な名著。

絶対的に磐石なものなどなく、全ては不安の中で移ろっていく。
しかし、それは悪いことではない。
誰がどこで何をどのように考えているのか、それは思いも付かない。
だからこそ、そのことを念頭においておくべきなのだ。
それは思い遣りである。それは優しさである。

パスカルは周知の通り、数学者でもある。
全てが不安定だからと言って、そこで全てを投げ出してはいけない。
スコラ哲学のような神学的秩序を作るのも面白い。
それが絶対ではなく、相対的で不安定でも構わない。
それはそれで面白い。
面白いと思った感情は、それはそれで立派なものである。
私はパスカルを読んで、面白いと思う。

パスカル、シェイクスピア、セルバンテスは近代の本質を、
それぞれ表していると思う。
そして、彼等のことを思うと、私は日本の世阿弥を思い出す。
世阿弥もお勧めです。

パスカルは周知の通り「パスカルの法則」でも有名な科学者。有名な「考える葦」を含む文章や「幾何学の精神vs繊細の精神」「人間の偉大と悲惨」など、魅力的な考察が満ち溢れている。ーーこの大宇宙の中で私はなんと小さな存在であることか。私を殺すために宇宙が武装する必要はない。水の一滴で足りる。けれでもその水の一滴に右往左往する私は、私とこの大宇宙の関係について思いを馳せることができる。「考える葦」である私はまた、自分が「風にそよぐ葦」であることを知っている。ーー

たまたまこの本を読み返していて、驚いたことがある。自分の頭で考えたつもりの多くのことがこの本の中に書かれていたのだ。似たようなことを太宰治でも経験した。そのとき私は、自分で思っていた以上に太宰治に影響されていたことを知って、愕然とした。

科学者たちの中には、天才的な科学者の彼がこんな本のために時間を割いたことを残念がる声もある。科学の眼で見れば、思想哲学なんて文学的趣味の延長でしかないのだろう。でも、パスカルがこれを書いておいてくれなければ、その後の思想界が随分ちがったものになっていた可能性は否定できないだろう。
