愚かな人間像を軽妙に描くシーンが延々と続く。しかし愚者を引き合いに賢者を持ち上げるのではなく，賢者もからかいの対象とする。ちょっと退屈だな，と思っていると最後のキリストおよび使徒のシーンは，賢者ではなく，人間の愚かさこそがキリスト教信仰につながる道であることを鮮やかに論説する。エラスムスがカトリックの腐敗を批判しつつ，ルターのように「正しいキリスト教」を生真面目に追求する道をとらなかった理由がよくわかる。
