フランクリン
1706~90。政治家、文筆家、発明家、科学者、印刷業者。ボストンのろうそく製造業者の家に生まれ、12歳で兄の営む印刷所に奉公に入る。その後、フィラデルフィアに移り、印刷の仕事に携りながら文章の錬磨に努める。買いとった新聞社から出版した暦が好評を博し、財をなす。やがて経営をパートナーにまかせ、科学・学術の分野での活動、政治活動に専念した。1776年の「独立宣言」の起草ではジェファソンを助けた

渡辺 利雄
1935年(昭和10年)台湾新竹市生まれ。1958年、東京大学文学部英文科卒。東京大学文学部教授、日本女子大学文学部教授・文学部長などを歴任。東京大学名誉教授。専門はアメリカ文学(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

13徳目が有名すぎますが、それ以前の「人付き合いのしかた」についてあらゆる角度で述べられていて面白い。観察眼がよほど優れていたのだろうが、どのようにしたら人は思うように動いてくれるかということがかなり詳細に書かれている。
とにかくひとつひとつのアイディアが常人のそれとは違うのだなといちいち感じさせられるのだが、根底にあるのはとにかく勤勉に働きなさいよ、ということに尽きる。
そして、たまには脇目もふらず自分を陥れようとした人間に返り討ちをしようとする人間らしさを隠そうともせず戦功のように語り掛けてくる。
訳者の方がよほど優秀なのか、古典のものにしてはかなり読みやすい文章なのも印象的です。索引も丁寧で編集の力量も感じさせてくれる。

　フランクリンプランナー（時間管理の方法）を始めるに
あたって、解説書を読んだ。この中で紹介されていたのが
この本。岩波文庫の同書だと価格が安いのだが、活字がつ
ぶれたような印刷で、ちょっと敬遠してしまった。

　内容的にはスラスラ読める内容ではない。戻りながらじ
っくりとゆっくりと考えながら読む本。堅実、勤勉とはな
にかと言うことを、精神論に偏ることないない内容で聞い
てみたい方は、この本がおすすめです。

１３徳で有名なフランクリンの自叙伝だ。
勤勉で極めて合理的な考え方が随所に現れている。

箴言的なものいいも興味深い。
「確かなことでも確信なげに話せ」
「不遜な言葉には弁護の余地がない」
「一度面倒を見てくれた人は進んでまた面倒を見てくれる。こっちが
恩を施した相手はそうはいかない」など。

また１３徳に関しては、「完全に道徳を守ることは、同時に自分の
利益でもあるというような、単に理論上の信念だけでは過失を
防ぐことはとうていできない。〜まずそれに反する習慣を打破し、
良い習慣を作ってこれをしっかり身につけなければならない」
と述べている。

そして徳を身につけるための具体的な方法が綴られる。
毎日、手帳のチェックシートを使って徳を身につけるそのやり方は、
日本人からすると違和感を覚えないではないが、確かに合理的な方法
ではある。

いかにもアメリカ的、プラグマティズム的だが、凡人が良い習慣を
身につけようとする時、最も効率的な手段かもしれない。

フランクリンの１３徳の身につけ方についてはいろんな本が出て
いるが、やはり元となっている本書を読むことをお勧めする。
その方が背景にあるフランクリンのものの考え方も分かるからだ。
時間のない方は１３徳の部分だけ拾い読みするのもいいだろう。
