1902~92。動物学者、人類学者。京都西陣の織元の家に生まれる。京都帝国大学農学部卒業。カゲロウ種間の比較観察から棲み分け理論を唱える。後年は、生存競争を強調する西欧の進化論への批判をつよめ、種社会の主体性と共存の理論にもとづく独自の進化論を展開した。またニホンザル、チンパンジーなどの研究を進め、日本の霊長類学の礎を築いた。登山家、探検家としても知られる。1979年文化勲章受章(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

学部時代に読んで、やられてしまった本です。
「棲み分け」理論はこの人が言いだしっぺです。
いまだに、仕事やプライベートで「すみわけ」という言葉を聴くと、ほんとに心臓がバクバクします。

この本は著者が若いときの本で、まだ意欲的で既存の生態学をぶちこわすぞ的な勢いがあります。

後の今西進化論での「なるべくしてなる」とか「いわくいいがたし」とか、もう科学じゃないです。呪術的です。
そのような危険な非科学的な予感がする本です。

　この今西錦司『生物の世界』（以下本書）を、「古典的名著」と捉えることには異論がある。今日の理論的立場から評価が定まったものを古典と呼ぶならば、本書はそれに該当しない。今西が本書で打ち出した「生物（種）の主体性」にせよ、「種社会による棲みわけ」にせよ、「もとは一つから分化発展した（３８億年の）種の歴史」にせよ、今の時点で評価は定まらない。なにしろ今日の「正統派生物学」（ネオダ-ウィニズム）には、まったく欠落しているロジックばかりだからである。今西は本書の結論にあたる第５章で「私は進化論の正統的学説と認められている自然淘汰説を相手どって、それに対する不承服を宣言した」と書いている。この本は日米開戦の年に刊行されたが、戦後に今西が創始して世界に発信した“サル学”は、まさに本書の検証作業であった。今西が晩年になって「今西進化論」を唱えたとしばしば誤解されるが、まったく逆である。今西の“サル学”は「人と猿との通行止めを取り払う」、すなわち「もとは一つに始まる（３８億年の）種の歴史」の解明を求めたところに発する。ところが、欧米の「人類学」が、自らの“サル学”とは決定的に相容れないことが、今西自身次第に分からなくなっていく。晩年に「今西進化論」を再開する頃には、今西は「人類学」の一神教を引きずった考え方、つまり「人間が動物と断絶している」と捉える思考である「人間起源」を認めてしまっている。これでは「もとは一つに始まる（３８億年の）種の歴史」の解明などできるはずがない。晩年の「今西進化論」は、この点で最初から破綻していた。そして本書刊行から６１年後、本書の原点に立ち返り、新たに進化機構としての“脳モデル”を付け加えた理論が登場した。それが『新今西進化論』（星雲社）である。本書を否定した「正統派生物学」が、最新の脳科学ともリンクした新今西理論によって、古典となる日は近い。
