ジョーク集と銘打たれているが、戦時下の貴重な資料集といった内容。当時の週刊誌、月刊誌、新聞記事などを幅広く網羅した上で、著者の的確な解説が加えられている。戦時下、厳しい状況の中でも決して笑いを忘れなかった日本人の姿が浮かび上がってきて、胸を打たれる。ヒトラーをネタにした漫才や、東条内閣を笑う替え歌など、読んでいて驚かされるネタも多い。「戦中暗黒史観」を一蹴する良書。

ジョーク集と銘打ってありながら、戦況の悪化に伴って言論統制や国威発揚の色が濃くなっていく様子が分かり、読んでいて笑うどころか陰鬱になること間違いなし。
しかし、当時の一般の人々の生活や「お笑い業界」の活動を織り交ぜながら、時代の空気を描き出す手法は秀逸と思える。
太平洋戦争といえば、ミッドウェイ海戦における情報戦とか原爆投下の人道的是非に議論が集まりがちだが、それらとはまた違った側面を知ることが出来る一冊。

『世界の日本人ジョーク集』が面白かったので中身を見ずに買ったが、見事に裏切られた。満州事変･日中戦争編にも言える事だが、太平洋戦争についてのジョークが少ない、というか皮肉ったり風刺したりするものは殆ど無い。単純にこの時代に流行ったジョークを集めただけという具合である。

　時代に関する解説も付いていてこの時代の雰囲気を感じられるかもしれないが、これを読んで笑うのは少々難しい。特に、漫才を活字に直すと全く面白くない、という事を実感させられた。漫才師の掛け合いがあって初めて成立するものなのだろう。
