　英語教師の立場から見て、なるほど！と思う本でした。日本語と英語、基本的には同じ言語という仲間なんだということを改めて感じました。実践的コミュニケーション力が叫ばれる中、やはり基礎基本がなくてはならない。物事にはやはり、きちんと順序があるんですよね。誰だってその言葉を自然に使いこなすわけではない。本当に使える英語って何なのか、考えなおしました。

文法軽視、｢実践コミュニケーション｣主義の傾向がある今日の英語教育だけでなく、水準が下がってきている国語教育も厳しく批判している。「日本語力があっての英語力だ」、「真の国際コミュニケーションが出来るようになる近道などない」、など、本書に書かれていることは、英語達人を目指す人のみならず、英語を学習する人、英語にかかわる人すべてに読んでもらいたい。

著者らの意見に基本的には賛成だけど、記述の矛盾が気になった。

（子どもに英語で話し掛けるのは良くない。そんなことしたら、子どもに悪い発音が身に付いてしまう。と言いつつも、「私は自分の子どもに英書を読んで聞かせて、発音と意味を教えている」との記載がある。）

対話という形式なのだから、ある程度は仕方ないのかもしれないけれど、主張に矛盾があるとどうしても説得力が弱くなってしまう。

自分が「良いな」と思った部分だけ、自身の勉強法に利用するのが、本書の最良な利用法でしょう。

上達の方法なんて、人それぞれ。他人に合った方法が、自分に合うとは限らないのだから。
